For example there are snow capped peaks and arid canyons as well as lush forests and and colonial towns. At 1,200m above sea level, Salta is a great base for exploration of the region.
Beyond Salta, high in the Atacama desert, is the puna, an extraordinary landscape of white salt flats surrounded by mountains, moon-like fields of pumice and sand dunes. Apart from a few flamingo doteted lakes and a few ex-mining settlements, there is little evidence of life.

Argentina’s Lake District is as pretty as a picture. It extends into Northern Patagonia and is perfect for outdoorsy types. The Pampas is best known for being the home of the gauchos. Argentina’s famous cowboys. It’s a region of endless plains with the fertile soils which sustain the pastured need for beef cattle. You will see some attractive little towns, however they are few and far between. The area can be atmospheric in a morning mist or at sunset. Here you can visit ranches, many of which nowadays welcome visitors.
When is the best time to visit Argentina?
Argentina can be visited year round. The southern half is best enjoyed between October and April with peak months of December to February.
