Madeira, sometimes known as the 'Garden Island' sits off shore in the Atlantic, but is part of Portugal. It is a perfect all year round holiday destination with mild winters and plenty of sunshine. Thick forests, waterfalls, horse riding, walking and natural history tours are popular here. For botanists, Madeira is a paradise islands with flowers and trees flourishing everywhere.
The capital, Funchal, has colourful daily fruit and fish markets and attractive architecture surrounds the narrow, cobbled old town. Madeira has become something of a sporting centre offering canyoning, surfing, hiking and whale and dolphin watching.

There are nine major and eight smaller islands, lying 1500km from Lisbon. The islands of volcanic origin are actually the tips of some of the highest mountains on the planet, were they to be measured from their base at the foot of the deep ocean!!
