Most of Tibet survives on subsistence agriculture but tourism is a fast growing industry. In 1959 the Tibetan government was abolished when the region was incorporated into the People's Republic of China. Tibetan Buddhism is the main religion here and this has a huge influence on the culture of the land, reflected in art, music and festivals. Architecture also portrays the influences from China and India as is the cuisine, although local staple foods in Tibet are roasted barley, yak meat and butter tea.

Mount Kailash is a holy pilgrimage site for Tibetans and Hindus, the later believing the mountain to be the home of Lord Shiva.
