Hong Kong was a colony of the British Empire from the mid 1800s and was originally just on Hong Kong Island, but boundaries were extended to the Kowloon Peninsula and then New Territories. It was occupied by Japan in the Pacific War then the British regained control until handing it back to China. Sitting on the south coast of China it is surrounded by the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea. The centre point is it's deep natural harbour. It's one of the most populated areas in the world with 95% of the population being ethnic Chinese.
