Overview & Highlights

Sitting on the Equator, 225 kilometres west of Gabon, the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe is Africa’s second smallest country after the Seychelles.

Part of an extinct volcanic range, the country consists of two small archipelagos clustered around the two main islands, São Tomé and Príncipe.

These far-flung tropical islands are as yet hardly known, being accessible only by means of 5 flights a week via Lisbon.

They offer a paradise of unexplored jungles, crystal clear waters, palm-lined beaches and delicious Portuguese-Creole cuisine. They also support an array of rare, forest-dependent life forms and thanks to its distinctive biodiversity, Principe is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

This nature holiday is perfect for active travellers wanting to explore new and remote destinations off the beaten track. Savour delicious traditional cuisine and enjoy learning about the wonderful community spirit so evident among the resident people.

  • Rainforest hiking and birding in Obô Natural Park
  • Remote, deserted beaches including Praia Jale and Praia Inhame in South Sao Tome
  • Beach and snorkelling time in beautiful Principe
  • Exploring Principe’s marvellous hiking trails
  • Learning about Santomean culture and enjoying traditional cuisine
  • Turtle-watching and Whale watching in season

“These far-flung tropical isles in the Gulf of Guinea, with their modest infrastructure and limited accessibility, makes them ideal for people keen on exploring something refreshingly new. We advise booking far in advance as flights are often full, it’s such a unique destination!”

Start with 4 nights on Sao Tome at Omali Lodge, your comfortable base for exploring the larger of the two islands. Our selected range of excursions will give you the opportunity to explore a rainforest trail and take in some birding; enjoy a culinary experience and visit the quiet, remote beaches on the wilder southern coast.

Then on to Principe, a delightful island where you enjoy a break at the stylish and atmospheric Roca Belo Monte, which has access to five very photogenic beaches, notably the glorious Praia Banana.

If you are on Principe from late December through to late March, you’ll be able to see (and assist) hatchling marine Turtles make it to the ocean!

Enjoy warm hospitality and good food whilst trying some of the many activities possible here, such as scuba diving, turtle watching (in season), and hiking.

“Away from electronic devices & noise – apart from Baboons and cicadas- we passed very relaxing days and long restful nights! On New Year’s Eve we all ended up dancing round a huge log fire at midnight, toasting the new year with Prosecco!
