Discover Kenya’s Ancient North

Travel deep into the northern rift valley mountains and plateaus surrounding Mount Kenya, and Samburu region. Discover the ancient, remote Mathews Mountains on foot with Samburu guides.

Guided by members of Kenya’s most highly regarded guides, immerse yourself in the smells, sights, and sounds of the bush while considering the great need to preserve the ecology, wildlife, and people of the surroundings. Walk with members of the Tumaren community and learn the art of tracking.

This holiday is perfect for the seasoned safari goer, wanting to get off the tourist trail and explore on foot and sleep under the stars.

Also, a fabulous holiday for those interested in geology and ancient history as you traverse beautiful landscapes that tell the story of a turbulent geologic past alongside the Rift Valley. Archeological artifacts like flints, shards, graves and pottery litter the ground, evidence of an equally rich cultural history.

Karisia Walking Safaris can also be booked for families, a true trip of a lifetime for your little ones to learn about life in the bush & an experience which will stay with them forever!

Unique cultural experiences such as witnessing the ‘singing wells’ are truly special. A tradition only found in this particular part of Kenya, the wells are dug deep into dry riverbeds. The Maasai and Samburu warriors create a human chain that descends into the well so water can be passed up to the surface in buckets. The men “sing” a hauntingly beautiful chant that reverberates through the valley. This song also acts as a signal to their cows, telling them it’s time to come and enjoy a drink. Only during the dry season.

Jules Croucher

“When you walk through the heart of Kenya’s trails and forests you experience and ‘feel’ the real Africa. Passing through remote villages, camping with camels, swimming in natural pools and witnessing truly ‘wild’ wildlife is a safari like no other.”

  • Days 1-3: Fly from Wilson airport & transfer to Kitich Forest Camp for 3 nights. The Mathews Mountain Ranges rise out of the desert; a chain of peaks covered in dense dewy forest. Within this lush indigenous forest, Kitich Forest Camp is an idyllic hideaway and an authentic bush camp, offering its guests a private and unique forest wildlife experience in Africa. The camp, of just 6 en-suite tents, nestles in a verdant grove of fig trees, indigenous flowering shrubs and prehistoric cycad palms, on the bank of the Ngeng River. Ensconced in a pristine wilderness, Kitich Forest Camp avoids traditional game drives, instead of encouraging guests to explore these wild environs on foot, guided by local guides. Swim in natural rock pools formed by crystal clear mountain streams, learn traditional ways of tracking wildlife, and unwind by a cosy log fire in the evenings with nothing but the sights and sounds of this pure wilderness.
  • Days 4-7: Tumaren Camp/ Karisia Walking Safaris 3 nights. Based out of the 30,000-acre Tumaren Ranch, Karisia Walking Safaris provides the exhilarating safari experience and traditional adventure of getting up close to nature on foot. Supported by a train of camels, Karisia offers a range of walking safaris from luxury camps set up in remote safari-specific locations to a traditional walking safari based out of the rustic Tumaren Camp. Family-run and hosted, Karisia Walking Safaris provide the perfect adventure in Kenya’s remote Northern Territories – getting you ‘off the grid’ and discovering the diverse wildlife and beauty of one of Kenya’s most remote and breath-taking areas and the vibrant colourful people that call it home.
  • Days 8-9: Perched on the edge of an escarpment, Loisaba Tented Camp is designed to capitalize on unhindered views across Laikipia’s mottled landscape all the way to Mt Kenya. All accommodations and main areas enjoy a breathtaking vantage point over an expansive panorama. Loisaba Conservancy is a success story of conservation. Home to elephant, lion, wild dog, and an abundance of other species, Loisaba is a prime example of successful collaboration between conservation, communities, ranching, and tourism.
  • Day 10: Fly back to Wilson airport.
