Mr & Mrs G – South Africa (Jan 2019)

Thank you for organising a self drive route for us very promptly, and amending the itinerary to suit our requirements.  The accommodation was all lovely, and we seemed to have the most “up-market” rooms available in each hotel. For example, in the Arniston Spa hotel rather than a standard room, they gave us a suite on two floors with multiple rooms, 3 giant TVs and a bar area! We have not experienced that sort of thing when travelling before, which made us feel rather extravagant! The hotels and the locations themselves were lovely, and were good choices. Overall we were very happy with a luxurious experience.

There were so many highlights, it is very difficult to decide what to put first! In terms of accommodation/location the cottage in Orange Grove farm (winelands) was tremendous: absolutely beautiful view with private swimming pool and great bird watching. It was lovely to house our friends and do the traditional braai after local wine tasting.

The hotels in Hermanus and Wilderness were very nice; the hosts in Wilderness were extraordinarily helpful and informative.  We loved Stormsrivier and Tsitsikama area: we did the canoe trip which was very impressive. The hotel might need to come on the bottom of the list but nevertheless was perfectly fine! Fynbos ridge was great and Nigel enjoyed the surfing and swimming with seals in Plettenburg bay.

Oudtshoorn was very interesting , despite it being far from anything and isolated… but that is South Africa! And what a drive through the mountains to the Karoo (R62 from George to Robertson)…and the Ostrich farms and Cango caves were amazing. The Franschhoek pass is not to be missed either and don’t forget the Knysna heads…..  Well where do we stop?
