Jon Dailey – Alaska (June 2016)

I’m currently in the process of visiting all the States of the USA and this trip was going to tick-off Alaska as number 45! All my other trips have been on a Harley or in a 4×4 (all recent years have been booked by Travel With Jules) so when a train trip around part of Alaska was suggested, this was going to be a new experience. I was a little apprehensive that each leg of my journey (5 in all, approx. 120 miles each) was going to take about 4 hours but the scenery in Alaska is spectacular and time flew by. The train even slowed down or stopped so we could take photographs of wildlife or particularly interesting views and the running commentaries delivered by the on board. Alaskan tour-guides were both interesting and informal. I’d certainly recommend the “Gold Star” package which includes a sit-down meal served in the restaurant car on each journey and upstairs seating with glass-dome ceilings.

Each of the towns/cities I stayed in had their own unique character and every hotel sorted out the luggage transport from/to the train so that I was free to explore (or find a bar!). The people were extremely friendly and genuinely seemed pleased that you were enjoying their un-spoilt country. It took a little while to get used to almost 22 hours daylight and this was exacerbated by quite a few early morning starts. The other “must-do” trips are the day-cruise to the Kenai Fjords National Park from Seward, the wilderness jet boat tour from Talkeetna, the day-bus tour into Denali National Park, the historic city and museum tour in Fairbanks and the Sternwheeler Riverboat tour also in Fairbanks. Alaska is HUGE and so beautiful that I want to go back to see more of it. Probably my favourite State! … Thanks Jules and Mags for organising a most memorable trip.
