Explore the treasures of Louisiana on a self drive 8 day holiday to the 'deep south' of United States of America. Starting in the vibrant city of New Orleans, soak up the night life and sights of this famous city with it's mix of colonial history and modern culture. No trip to the city would be complete without a taste of a Po-Boy sandwich and also, the famous Sazerac cocktail, the first cocktail ever created. Journey onto the nearby Plantation Country to see these stunning antebellum style homes rich in history. Elsewhere in the state, the Creole Nature Trail in Lake Charles adds outdoor life to the mix, whilst the airboat swamp tours add adventure in the Plantation Country. Lafayette and Natchitoches are great spots to soak up Southern culture and history too.

ITINERARY
Day 1
New Orleans
Fly from the UK today into New Orleans to begin your fly drive holiday around the state of Louisiana, picking up your car at the airport.
Day 2
New Orleans
Spend the day exploring New Orleans with a visit first to the French Quarter district of the city. Here Jackson Square is home to the iconic St Louis Cathedral, the Cabildo, once a city hall, and the Presbytere. Take a walk along Bourborn Street, well known for its bars and vibrant night life. Go shopping in the antique stores of Royal Street. Discover the art of the city at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and travel on a traditional street car. Do not leave New Orleans without having a Po-Boy, a traditional New Orleans dish; French bread with mayonnaise and fried oysters or shrimp; a real Deep South treat!
Day 3
New Orleans - Plantation Country (1 Hour)
The Plantation Country of Louisiana is located under an hour from the city of New Orleans. Here discover nine plantation homes and take a wander around these historical buildings. A stay at Houmas House is a great base for your two nights in the Plantation Country and Baton Rouge (under an hour and a half away). Houmas House is often described as the jewel of the homes, and also has a fantastic restaurant. You might wish to make a visit to Oak Alley Plantation, the most photographed home in the state, designed in a beautiful Greek revival style. Day 4
Plantation Country
Make a visit to Baton Rouge to visit the Old Louisiana State Capitol as well as the Old Governor’s Mansion. Enjoy a fun adventure in the Plantation Country by going on a swamp tour on airboats through the swamps and marshes for a chance to see many mammals and birds including alligators.
Day 5
Plantation Country - Natchez/Natchitoches (3 Hours/3 Hours)
Travelling north through the state of Louisiana, arrive in Natchez located on the other side of the Mississippi River. In this friendly Southern town pass the antebellum homes and take a horse-drawn carriage through the town. Alternatively, travel to Louisiana's Natchitoches, the oldest settlement in Louisiana; visit the old Creole town houses and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. There are plenty of boutique shops to meander through too. For an extended fly drive holiday, journey further north into the towns of Shreveport and Vicksburg. In Vicksburg, learn about the battle in the Civil War and take a tour of the Coca Cola Museum.
Day 6
Natchez/Natchitoches - Lake Charles (3 Hours/2.5 Hours)
Travel south through Louisiana to Lake Charles, a gaming town and the home to the Creole Nature Trail National Scenic Byway. We recommend spending a half day exploring this All American Road and one of the oldest scenic byways in the country. Here visit one or more of the wildlife refuges. On this byway, there is the opportunity to see up to 400 bird species.
Day 7
Lake Charles - Lafayette (1.5 Hours)
Journey into Lafayette, the 'Capital of French Louisiana', where you can learn about the Acadians and Cajuns. In the town of St Martinville, visit the Catholic Church founded by the Acadians. Vermionville is a worth a visit to discover how life was on the Bayou, with costumed actors depicting the history.
Day 8
Lafayette - New Orleans (2 Hours)Arriving back in New Orleans, depart for your onward journey to the UK or extend your stay in the city or perhaps continue onto one of the other states of the Deep South.
