Episode 1
Joanna started at the southern tip of India, greeting the dawn with the locals and travelled through Kerala and the Western Ghats (where she travelled up the hundreds of hair pin bend zig zags on the back of a friend's Royal Enfield motorbike!) and on to Maduari and it's famous Meenakshi Amman Temple. She then took part in a film shoot in Hyderabad with it's modern city culture and technology and spent some time in the famous jewellery bazaars. Ask Jules about staying at the unique Taj Falaknuma Palace here! To the far north in Sikkim, Joanna enjoyed the cool mountain air and tried to trace her parents and grand parents home, finding some amazing old letters with the help of local historians.

Did you know that the lovely blue & green elephant scarf which Joanna was wearing in the Kerala / elephants scene was produced by a local (to us) company (and fellow Theo Paphitis SBS winners!) "Where Does It Come From"? This lovely small business works with local artisan weavers in India (mainly in Gujarat) producing ethically sourced clothing with each article having it's own story tracing back to the person who made it. Joanna loved this so much she bought the elephant scarf! Here is the link if you would like to buy one as well :)

EPISODE 2
Joanna visited Mumbai which as she said, is a land of contrast .... multi million pound skyscraper apartments mix with the famous slums .... Jules visited the slums and had a tour around the artisan businesses there, it certainly was an eye opener! Plus the crazy railways, the 'lunch box' bike boys and the massive outdoor laundry .... all this whilst staying in the Taj Palace Hotel was a bit of an assault on the senses!
Inland Joanna went to the fabulous Ellora Caves - these buildings and temples carved into the rock are simply stunning.... Over to Ahmedabad she met local people and learned about the caste system of the poorer parts of the state.
North to Rajasthan, Joanna met the rural herdsmen who tend their camels in the deserts of the region. Jules also visited these fascinating tribes on a recent visit to India. Read about the herdsmen and Jawai Leopard Camp and the Golden City of Jaisalmer in Jules' blogs here.

Still in Rajasthan, Joanna visited Udaipur and the land of the Maharajahs, enjoying a ride in a classic car! She stayed in a royal palace hotel surrounded by mirrored ceilings, cushioned beds and intricate mosaics and laced architecture. Read here about Jules' trip to Udaipur and some of the amazing things you can experience here.
