Detailed Itineraries:
GREEN SEASON (Nov-May)
Day 1 Drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park (1.5hrs). Home to a unique ecosystem including Baobab studded woodland, rocky hilltops, grassy plains, swamps, and the famous sand rivers including the year-round permanent water or the Tarangire River. The park is home to hundreds of species of animals, including cape buffalo, lion, cheetah, leopard and elephant. Huge herds of elephant frequent the Tarangire River Valley, even in the green season. Drive to Manyara (1hr) to your luxury lodge perched on the escarpment edge overlooking Lake Manyara, for a private dinner and overnight. Escarpment Luxury Lodge, Lake Manyara x 2 nights
Day 2 After breakfast, visit Lake Manyara. Located beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment on the edge of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park offers varied ecosystems, incredible bird life, and breathtaking views. Known for its elephants and tree-climbing lions, it's also a birding paradise (more than 400 species), particularly for waterfowl and migrants. In the late afternoon, return to your lodge for sundowners and a private dinner.
Day 3 After breakfast, drive along the crater rim and then descend to the Serengeti plains. Serengeti National Park is one of the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, and symbolizes the classic African safari. With more than two million wildebeest, half a million Thomson's gazelle, and a quarter of a million zebra, it has the greatest concentration of plains game anywhere in Africa. The Serengeti is also synonymous with the annual wildebeest and zebra migration. The name 'Serengeti' comes from the Maasai language and means 'endless plain'. The National Park alone covers an area of 12,950 square kilometres. You'll spend the day game viewing, then in the early evening, settle in to the luxurious permanent camp located on the shore of Lake Masek, a small soda lake situated near the Serengeti's short grass plains, which in the green season make it so famous. In the southern grass plains during the 'green' months from November to May, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and Burchell's zebra congregate. The area is the starting point for one of the great wonders of the world: the Serengeti annual migration. Check in to your camp at day's end, and enjoy the comforts of a deluxe camp and gourmet dining, in the wilds of the African bush. Lake Masek Tented Camp, Serengeti x 2 nights
Day 4 Full day of game viewing in the southern Serengeti, with an option for a full day of game viewing with picnic lunches, or a return to camp for hot lunch and siesta before your afternoon game drive. Although outnumbered eight to one, the zebra join in the 'wildebeest migration', maintaining their family units of about a dozen members, each with a dominant stallion. Their yelping bark combines with the bleating of the wildebeest to give the typical song of the migration. Lion, cheetah, hyena and hunting dog follow the wildebeest and zebra, making sure that only the fittest survive. During the green season, this army of animals occupy the green pastures of the south, where they calve and mate before moving north in late May.
Day 5 Morning at leisure enjoying a private breakfast on the luxury tent verandah. Mid-morning departure for a game drive in the woodlands of Ndutu, en route to Gibbs Farm, situated just outside Ngorongoro Crater. Arrive at Gibbs in the early-afternoon. Day 6 Full day of gameviewing in the central Serengeti; an area called 'Seronera'. Seronera's hills rise out of plains criss-crossed by small rivers. Umbrella acacia trees appear, elegant and serene, contrasting with the twisted commiphora trees. Cheeky hyraxes and lizards play on the rocks and a profusion of birds - superb starlings, lilac-breasted rollers, barbets and ring-necked doves to name but a few - fill the air with their songs. But all around is some of the wildest bush in Africa. Giraffes nibble the tender leaves of the thorny acacias, buffalo lumber along, and all manner of game - Thomson's and Grant's gazelles, impala, topi and kongoni - graze nervously. At night the soaring cough of the leopard and the whooping laugh of the hyena interrupt the incessant ticking of the cicadas. And then there are famous black-maned lions of Seronera. A pride of up to twenty can often be seen in a tawny heap. Option for picnic lunches (and a full day in the park), or return to camp for lunch. Full board in the camp.
