Safari holidays for children
There is no greater education than to take your children to a different continent and experience alternative cultures - Africa has many life changing experiences on offer, including camping safaris, sleeping under the stars, horse riding through a river or even feeding a giraffe at your breakfast table at Giraffe Manor!

What is the best age to take children on safari?
We often get asked 'when is the right age to take children on an African Safari'? or 'where is the best place to go for family friendly wildlife holiday?'.
For very young children it’s best to stick to non-malarial areas of South Africa but from about age 8 upwards, there are specialist family safari options all over the continent. That's not to say children younger than 8 cannot travel elsewhere, we have had children from age 5 travel around Africa with their family, so please do get in touch and we will advise the best destination for your particular family.
Specialist guides for family safaris
Many camps and lodges, particularly in Zambia have fabulous guides who can look after the children, taking them on their own special safaris, learning how to read tracks in the bush, make bow and arrows and recognising bird song for example. Here is one example.
Lots of lodges, hotels and camps throughout Africa are very happy to teach any budding chefs you have in the family how to cook with African ingredients or bake cakes and bread in a bush oven!
Safari holiday activities for children
Kwande in South Africa have a fabulous young children's programme including teaching them baking skills. Zambia has some amazing family houses and specially adapted camps with family rooms and some great options in South Luangwa for family safaris combining bush skills, local culture and wildlife. Visit Victoria Falls and stay in one of the family houses there such as Sussi and Chuma or at Tongabezi.

Multi generation family safari holidays
If you are celebrating a special family event or milestone birthdays, why not take grandparents along with the children of all ages? We can create private safaris in your own camps, with your own vehicle and guide. There are many safari options which feature family houses and villas so you can all stay together with a private chef and babysitting if you need it.
In Botswana there is a ‘Young Explorers’ club which teaches children how to fire a bow and arrow, fish from a dugout canoe and bake in a bush oven. Kenya has lots of family friendly camps and chances for your children to mix with the Maasai and learn bush craft and meet others their age. Stay in the Masai Mara where you can enjoy stunning scenery and the Great Migration. There are some fabulous horse riding holidays in the Rift Valley and Laikipia in Kenya including many ranches or homesteads (such as Lewa or Borana) and conservancies where there are a whole range of activities for older children including biking, hiking with Samburu warriors, helicopter flights, bi-plane flights, quad bikes, fishing and more. Plus spas and yoga for the parents to relax!
Take your children to see elephants on safari
There are many places in Africa to see elephants - contact us for the best options for your family. You can visit Saba Douglas-Hamilton and her own family who run Elephant Watch Camp in Samburu and if you are in Nairobi take the children to see the orphans at the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage near Nairobi National Park.

Tanzania offers some classic safaris in the north such as the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park but there are some lovely family options to the south as well in Selous Game Reserve or very family friendly Saadani National Park on the coast where you can stay with Tent With A View in chalets on stilts and enjoy the wild coastline with elephants in the trees behind you!
Family beach holidays after safari
There are some great hotels and lodges on the East African coast which include a variety of water sports and opportunities for diving and snorkelling. For the ultimate in luxury family beach time, North Island Seychelles has stunning family villas and very family friendly staff who will involve your children in fishing, cooking and meeting the islands giant tortoises!

Family self drive holiday in Namibia
Namibia is an adventure playground particularly for older children and teenagers, self drive holidays are popular here where you can take the family to include some wildlife in Etosha, get up close to cheetahs at some of the conservation centres and enjoy stunning sand dunes and rugged coastlines which offer a multitude of experiences such as dune boarding, sky dives, kayaking with seals and quad biking and more. In the north of Namibia we can tailor make private camping experiences in the remote conservancies where you can meet the local tribes people and learn about wildlife protection projects.
