Trekking holidays to Everest Base Camp - Nepal
This is a group departure on a lodge based trek aiming for Everest Base Camp in Nepal on the Khumbu Glacier, following in the footsteps of great historical climbers. Its a tough trekking challenge, you need to be very fit and used to trekking at altitude. There are regular departures from October to May, but if these dates or this trip doesn't suit your requirements, please ask me to arrange a bespoke climb to Everest Base Camp. Likewise, if you would like to add more time in Nepal or the surrounding region of the Himalayas, do let me know and I can tailor the trip to suit.
Walking through Sherpa country through small villages and past cultivated fields, you follow the Dudh Kosi then a hard climb up to Namche Bazaar. There is stark but truly spectacular scenery as you rise above the tree line. At Thyangboche there is a paradise of photographs to be taken of this amazing monastery with the backdrop of Ama Dablam, Everest and other massive snow covered peaks of the Himalayas. The trek allows time to acclimatise on the way involving 12 days of point to point trekking with full porter service. The average altitude is 3900m and maximum 5545m. This is an 18 day trip including flights from the UK and consists of 4 nights in hotels and 12 in lodges in Nepal.
There is a free day for sightseeing in Katmandu on arrival and a full trek briefing. The next day you fly to the mountain airstrip of Lukla and set off on a short first section up the valley of Dudh Kosi with great views and spend the first night at Phakding. Continue on the same path north and walk through fabulous rhododendron and giant fir forests. Crossing a fork of the river you start a steep climb to Namche Mazaar where about 300m up you should have your first glimpse of Everest (cloud permitting). Namche is an important Sherpa village and trading centre and you overnight here. Climbing steeply from there you reach the Everest View Hotel with amazing views for a tea break. The trek on to Kyanjuma, stopping time permitting at the Edmund Hillary hospital in Kunde and the monastery in Khumjung (reputed to hold the only Yeti skull in the world!). Next day you descend to the river, crossing it and climbing again to Thyangboche at 3,876m. In the afternoon visit the famous monastery and watch the sunset across the vista of many mountains from your tea house. Onwards to Devoche you cross another river and climb up into Pangboche, at 3,900m the highest permanent settlement in the valley. End the day at Dingboche a summer settlement at 4,530m and if you want you can take an extra trek to Nangkarshang Peak. Climbing out of Dingboche you gradually reach Dugla at the end of the Khumbu Glacier. A short steep climb to Chukpo Lari where there is a poignant reminder of the pitfalls of Everest at a line of memorials to climbers who have lost there lives to this mountain. There is a beautiful panorama of the peaks on the Nepal-Tibet border. Then the trail eases to Lobuje, a tiny hamlet with a few tea houses. A long hard day follow the Khumbu Glacier to Gorak Shep at 5,180m. Eventually you arrive at the area known as Everest Base camp with great views of the Khumbu Ice Fall with Nuptse towering above and Pumori behind, return to Gorak Shep. Another hard day follows to the small peak of Kala Pattar where you can look down on the various base camps. Return past Lobuje and down to Pheriche for the night. Two days now descending through Imja Khola Valley and past alpine meadows and streams, walking back to Namche Bazaar along lovely high trails above the Dudh Kosi. Eventually returning to the airstrip at Lukla and flying back to Katmandu for a night in a hotel and onwards back to the UK.
