Holidays to South Africa are not complete with a safari and we are often asked "where can I do a safari that is malaria free?". Another problem is the rising cost of flights and connecting the Western Cape or Kwa Zulu Natal with the Kruger or Madikwe to the north all adds to the cost of your holiday.
The solution is to safari in the Eastern Cape! This region of South Africa is malaria free, has a great all year round warm climate and is only a short drive by road from Port Elizabeth and some fabulous beaches around St Francis Bay and along the Garden Route west towards Cape Town. There are a growing number of quality game reserves in the Eastern Cape, most are now home to the big five and offer family friendly safaris as well as a range of other activities such as boating safaris, canoeing, horse riding and walking.
The biggest is the Greater Addo National Park which is best known for it's large elephant herds. Inside Addo are good quality parks chalets a visitor centre and a restaurant if you want to self drive into the park. There are some fabulous safari camps here too including Gorah Elephant Camp which has a restored 19th century manor house at it's centre with 11 luxury tented suites under thatch and River Bend Lodge which is a luxury homestead with eight rooms and great for families. Just outside the park is the lovely Elephant House, a boutique B&B.
Shamwari is a well established privately owned game reserve set in hills around the Bushman River in 20,000 hectares. It's a one hour drive from Port Elizabeth and has a range of accommodation including Bayete Tented Camp, Longlee Manor, Riverdene Lodge and three others. Ask about the family safari programmes at Shamwari.
Growing in popularity in recent years for it's fabulous location and value for money is Kariega Game Reserve which spans five different eco-systems. Kariega River Lodge sits on the banks of the Bushman's River and has ten lovely suites and a main lodge with plenty of facilities and a great atmosphere. There are motorboat safaris here and you can take picnic trips to the beach at Kenton on Sea. The parts of Kariega which do not have the big 5 allow you to do hiking, biking, river swimming and canoeing.
If it's pure luxury and indulgence you are after then try Pumba Private Game Reserve. There are two luxury lodges Pumba Water Lodge and Msenge Bush Lodge. Pumba Water has 12 huge stone cottages with private decks and views of Karega Lake. The Msenge Bush Lodge has 11 chalets in a contemporary style with glass walls, viewing decks and plunge pools. There is also a spa at Msenge (which can be used by guests at Water Lodge). The food and service here is superb. There is also a white lion breeding programme here and wild dogs have been introduced along with cheetah.
An old favourite in the Eastern Cape and very good for community projects is the Amakhala Game Reserve. There are again several choices of accommodation here including the traditional Amakhala Safari Lodge, the stone chalets at Woodbury Lodge, Hlozi Lodge or the Bush Lodge and the traditional Inn at Reed Valley.
Ask us to put together a tailor made African Safari to include the Eastern Cape Game Reserves, ideal as part of a self drive holiday in South Africa and combines well with Cape Town and the Garden Route.
