There are two parts to Malaysia, with the Eastern provinces of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo island often being mistaken as being a separate country! Peninsular Malaysia sits south of Thailand with the capital Kuala Lumpur in the middle and Singapore on the end tip. The South China Sea separates peninsular Malaysia from the Eastern Provinces. There are beautiful beaches and coastlines, verdant interiors with rainforests and jungles, tea estates and temples, mosques and historic buildings.
Malaysia has a mix of customs and culture from India, China and other ethnic groups of Asia with colonial influences from the Dutch, British and Portuguese. There are colonial buildings to be found in many cities and towns, some of the best preserved from the 'days of the Raj' can be found in Penang, which was used as the film set for the Channel 4 series Indian Summers (replicating the hill stations of Northern India around Shimla).

Rickshaws, Blue Palace
The Kuala Lumpur skyline is dominated by the sci-fi like Petronas Towers - the tallest 'twin towers' in the world. Visit the grand rail station, Merdeka Square, the revolving restaurant on top of KL Tower and the night markets of China town. Another must see in Malaysia is the old spice route port of Malacca. This was once full of trading vessels and Chinese junks but still has interesting markets and busy streets. Inland to the Cameron highlands, there are treks and hiking trails, and colonial hill resorts surrounded by rose gardens and tea estates (although be aware that much of the highlands is covered by fruit farms and factories!).
Malaysia has wonderful beaches - some of the most picturesque parts of the coast are around Langkawi island which also has great wildlife and adventure activities. The East coast of Malaysia has lots of offshore islands with great diving and snorkelling. Head to Tanjong Jara on the North East coast for a tranquil getaway in huge tropical gardens full of monkeys and hornbills, a variety of restaurants (including the amazing Chef Ann!). On the west coast Pankor Laut is an island paradise with a remote beaches and forest trails and the most amazing spa I've ever experienced! (Jules). There are lots of incredible spas all over Malaysia.
Climate: Most of the year in Malaysia is hot and humid with rainfall usually heavy but brief in downpours. November to February brings monsoon downpours to the east cost of Peninsular Malaysia and the North East of Sabah and West of Sarawak. The best time to observe sea turtles on the East coast is May to September.

Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo have plenty of rainforests and wildlife, stunning dive sites and turtle beaches. Sepilok Forest Reserve is a large protected area most well known for it's Orang-utan sanctuary. The Mulu National Park in Sarawak is home to over 1500 species of flowering plants, a botanists paradise! There are also cave systems over 50 km long and you can visit the Ibans tribe and their long houses here. Danum Valley Conservation area is home to wildlife such as the Clouded Leopard, Orang-utan, Proboscis Monkeys, Macaques, Sun Bears and Samba Deer.
