Where do we get off the plane?!

Governor's Il Moran Camp, Masai Mara and Saruni Ocean Villa.

David and Sue Hughes travelled on a 'second honeymoon' to the Masai Mara and had a lovely long relaxing break on the coast after their safari.  Here is their story and lots of great photos!

"We contacted Travel With Jules via a mutual friend at fairly late notice having booked our flights to Kenya for our ‘bucket list’ holiday and needing a safari and some beach time to be booked for us. Giving us a wealth of knowledge from her years spent working in Africa, Jules soon put together the perfect holiday for us. Just back home, the holiday already seems like ages ago but we really did have the trip of a lifetime!

In the Masai Mara we were lucky enough to see all the main species of animals, including all of the 'Big Five' in the first two days which enabled us to slow down and relax after that, we often spent hours at a waterhole or just watching the wildlife and our guide at Governor's Il Moran ‘Maina’ (who we had requested) was superb.

We saw lions, cheetah, elephants, zebras, giraffe, leopards, rhinos, hippos, buffalo and many species of antelope and colourful birds. We even had Hippo and Elephants snuffling around the tents in the night!

The scenery was stunning and we gained another perspective on the vast, endless plains, from a hot air balloon ride – heading up as the sun rose over the Masai Mara and gliding along was certainly an experience not to be forgotten. When we landed we were treated to the most amazing ‘bush breakfast’ served by a chef in full ‘whites’ producing everything from pancakes to sausages on a bush oven!

One day our guide Maina took us on a game drive where we came across a fresh kill, surrounded by hyenas …. The noise of them crunching bones was a bit off putting to say the least! They didn’t get to keep the kill for long as a pair of lionesses took it away from them.

For a couple of days we were the only guests at Governor’s Il Moran camp, but even when others arrived we still had a jeep and guide to ourselves which was lovely.

Then we took off from the Mara in a small plane skirting the southern plains and over Amboseli to the Kenyan coast where we were greeted by Saruni Ocean for 12 nights of R&R on the beach! The villas and hotel were very ‘plush’ in a rustic, low key way and the staff were delightful, they couldn’t do enough for us. The food was a little variable, generally good (there were several chefs), but we did have with some meals that would be difficult to beat in a top class London restaurant some superb meals, Martina and Nicola the managers of the Saruni, often asked us what we would like to eat so which they then cooked to order.

The absolute highlight of our dining experience was and a private and romantic seafood BBQ on the beach with lobster, squid, prawns, fresh and fresh fish skewers! We had wine tastings three nights which hit the spot! We took a couple of local excursions, one to Diani for lunch at a large hotel which was a nice change of scenery and a day trip on the ‘Pili Pili’ Dhow boat for some snorkelling in the nearby marine park and a seafood lunch nearby.

All too soon the holiday is over and it’s ‘back to work’! Everyone we dealt with on our holiday, form planning stage to returning home made us feel so special. Thank you Jules for your arrangements and making it all work so well for us (especially talking to us whilst we were flying from the Mara, not sure which air strip to get off the plane!!). Jules knew that we had high expectations – which were all exceeded!
