Spanish Christmas at Parador La Gomera

La Gomera ... A peaceful and relaxing Christmas 2015

Imogen and Den wanted to escape for some winter warmth last Christmas and contacted us for ideas ... knowing that they enjoy fabulous food and wine, friendly hosts and small, character type places to stay, Jules suggested La Gomera .. turns out Imogen had always wanted to visit, having seen the island from afar on a trip to Tenerife many years before. Here is Imogen's delightfully descriptive feedback from their week in a Mediterranean paradise!

As Tenerife disappeared into the haze we watched a pod of dolphins dipping in and out of the wake of the ferry, before spinning away to the open sea.

La Gomera is a lifetime away from the hubbub of touristy Tenerife where we flew in. The Parador de la Gomera is a charming Canarian style mansion built into the headland of San Sebastián bright with Bougainvillea, sun gleaming against the white washed walls and vivid blue skies. Thick stone walls and sturdy wooden doors ..... Decorated in reds, golds and greens for Christmas.

Cool, shadowy interior built around a courtyard, plants dappled with sunlight gathered around a fountain and filled with birdsong ..... flagstones leading to corridors dotted with elegant seating. Our room, looking out across the lush tropical gardens towards the sea and views of Mount Teide. High ceilings, wooden floors, graceful elegant dark wood furniture, crisp bed linen and blankets.... Sparking white bathroom.

The most amazing array of hot and cold dishes from the breakfast buffet, gleaming heavy tea and coffee pots.... glints of polished cutlery, folds of starched table cloths.... looking out onto the sunlit garden, lingering over the breakfast crumbs and cups and saucers and planning the day. Friendly, helpful staff

La-Gomera-cliff-view Gardens: Seating facing the sea grouped in sunny clearings, tables and chairs set out under a shady veranda. Winding paths, potted ferns, bright greens, wild plants encroaching from and spilling over the cliff edges, lizards, butterflies, bees, pomegranates and date palms. From here views of the rocky ravine, jagged against the skyline, a tumble of buildings cascading towards San Sebastián, looking down onto the harbour and palm lined waterfront. People strolling enjoying the warm evening, chatting to family and friends, parents pushing babies in prams, older couples arm in arm, children weaving in and out of the adults on bicycles and playing football in the square. The fragrance of jasmine lingers on the air. Pavement tables are spread with tapas and laughter echoes... Church doors open wide, warm light spilling into the darkening street.

There were a wide variety of bars and places to eat just a short walk from the hotel and an affordable taxi ride back if needed.

Imogen and Den enjoyed escaping the UK for Christmas and as you can tell from these notes, completely relaxed and embraced the warm Mediterranean hospitality. Read more about Spain and it's many Paradors.
