Also in Africa you could sleep in a star bed (again a wonderful experience for a romantic escape) with many safari camps having platforms where they can ‘wheel out’ your bed and have you sleep under the stars – in the Okavango Delta such as Baines Camp, in Kenya at Loisaba Star Beds or the shores of Lake Malawi at Nkwichi Lodge to name a few. Speaking of stars – if you are keen on astronomy and ‘James Bond’ style playgrounds, stay at Leobo in the Waterburg, South Africa where you have your own Observatory!
Africa has more than it’s fair share of unusual places to spend the night .. a favourite in Kenya is Giraffe Manor where you can sleep in the old manor house and wake to share your breakfast with a Giraffe poking it’s head into your window! Mafia Island is home to wonderful tree-houses set in huge baobab trees – feel the breeze from the Indian Ocean as you sleep level with the tree canopy at Chole Mjini! On Pemba Island head to The Manta Resort, which has its very own Underwater Room. The floating structure has three levels, including a roof which is perfect for launching off into the sea. Downstairs, is the below-sea level bedroom, where you can see species such as trumpet and bat fish, Spanish dancers, squid and octopus from your bed! In North America there are a variety of ‘cowboy’ options to stay on a ranch or live like a native Indian and sleep in a tee-pee! Mustang Monument has amazing huge tee-pee rooms where you can ride with the wild mustangs by day and sleep under canvas at night. Along Route 66 there are two remaining original ‘Wigwam Motels‘ you can stay in – one at Holbrook, Arizona and the other near San Bernardino in California. USA has a huge range of quirky and unusual hotels and motels, in the shape of dogs, boots, caravans and cars to name a few! In Boston, you can stay in a converted Jail house!! Once the Charles Street Jail, the Liberty Hotel Boston has done away with its image as a former jailhouse – to an extent … you can eat in the stylish CLINK restaurant and Alibi bar, and jail-time features have been preserved, including vestiges of jail cells, catwalks and three-storey arched windows.
There are also some amazing Yurts which you can stay in, found in America and other locations around the world. Traditionally found in Mongolia and Central Asia there are also many safari camps in Africa who have adopted this style of room, such as found at Nomad’s camp in Loliondo, Tanzania.
In Latin America, stay at the Magic Mountain Hotel in the Huilo Huilo Reserve which covers 60,000 hectares of Valdivian forest in Chile, and has natural hot springs, unexplored lakes and direct access to the Mocho Choshuenco volcano. Accommodation ranges from rooms in the main lodge, which has a waterfall cascading from the pinnacle of the roof, to secluded forest lodges. Also in Latin America stay in a luxury hotel in Mexico set around an old bull ring! Quinta Real Zacatecas, Zacatecas is located around the restored 19th century San Pedro bullfighting ring and is now a luxury hotel. The last bull run was in 1975. The hotel’s restaurant now looks over the old arena, while the brick-walled bar is located where the bullpens used to be.
Into the Polar Regions there are many options to stay in Ice Hotels and Snow Hotels – igloos and snow caves feature all over the Arctic regions, combine with the Tree Hotel in Lulea, Sweden for a fabulous Northern Lights spotting experience!
