Unusual places to stay!

Bespoke holidays and honeymoons – unusual places to sleep and stay!

Whether you want to sleep in a treehouse, stay with a Maasai tribe in a mud hut, mush huskies and sleep in a forest camp, sleep under the stars or snooze to the sound of waves lapping on your houseboat, there are hundreds of unique and unusual places to stay around the world!

Browse our selection of unusual holiday places to stay …. There are Tree houses all over Africa which are a wonderful adventure for a family holiday or a romantic escape for a honeymoon. Also in Africa you could sleep in a star bed (again a wonderful experience for a romantic escape) with many safari camps having platforms where they can ‘wheel out’ your bed and have you sleep under the stars – in the Okavango Delta such as Baines Camp, in Kenya at Loisaba Star Beds or the shores of Lake Malawi at Nkwichi Lodge to name a few. Speaking of stars – if you are keen on astronomy and ‘James Bond’ style playgrounds, stay at Leobo in the Waterburg, South Africa where you have your own Observatory!

Tree House at Chole Mjini - Mafia Island

Tree House at Chole Mjini – Mafia Island

Africa has more than it’s fair share of unusual places to spend the night .. a favourite in Kenya is Giraffe Manor where you can sleep in the old manor house and wake to share your breakfast with a Giraffe poking it’s head into your window!  Mafia Island is home to wonderful tree-houses set in huge baobab trees – feel the breeze from the Indian Ocean as you sleep level with the tree canopy at Chole Mjini!  On Pemba Island head to The Manta Resort, which has its very own Underwater Room. The floating structure has three levels, including a roof which is perfect for launching off into the sea. Downstairs, is the below-sea level bedroom, where you can see species such as trumpet and bat fish, Spanish dancers, squid and octopus from your bed!  Also in Tanzania, Tent with a View offer you the opportunity to sleep in a Land Rover!

In North America there are a variety of ‘cowboy’ options to stay on a ranch or live like a native Indian and sleep in a tee-pee!  Mustang Monument has amazing huge tee-pee rooms where you can ride with the wild mustangs by day and sleep under canvas at night.  Along Route 66 there are two remaining original ‘Wigwam Motels‘ you can stay in – one at Holbrook, Arizona and the other near San Bernardino in California.  USA has a huge range of quirky and unusual hotels and motels, in the shape of dogs, boots, caravans and cars to name a few!  In Boston, you can stay in a converted Jail house!! Once the Charles Street Jail, the Liberty Hotel Boston has done away with its image as a former jailhouse – to an extent …  you can eat in the stylish CLINK restaurant and Alibi bar, and jail-time features have been preserved, including vestiges of jail cells, catwalks and three-storey arched windows.

There are also some amazing Yurts which you can stay in, found in America and other locations around the world.  Traditionally found in Mongolia and Central Asia there are also many safari camps in Africa who have adopted this style of room, such as found at Nomad’s camp in Loliondo, Tanzania.

In Latin America, stay at the Magic Mountain Hotel in the Huilo Huilo Reserve which covers 60,000 hectares of Valdivian forest in Chile, and has natural hot springs, unexplored lakes and direct access to the Mocho Choshuenco volcano. Accommodation ranges from rooms in the main lodge, which has a waterfall cascading from the pinnacle of the roof, to secluded forest lodges. Also in Latin America stay in a luxury hotel in Mexico set around an old bull ring! Quinta Real Zacatecas, Zacatecas is located around the restored 19th century San Pedro bullfighting ring and is now a luxury hotel. The last bull run was in 1975. The hotel’s restaurant now looks over the old arena, while the brick-walled bar is located where the bullpens used to be.

Into the Polar Regions there are many options to stay in Ice Hotels and Snow Hotels – igloos and snow caves feature all over the Arctic regions, combine with the Tree Hotel in Lulea, Sweden for a fabulous Northern Lights spotting experience! At the Tree Hotel you can stay in a Bird’s Nest, UFO or Mirror Cube!

If you like to sleep to the sound of trains ‘clacking’ through the night there are some amazing overnight train experiences around the world – see our dedicated page for train travel.

Unleash the inner ‘caveman’ in you and sleep in one of the amazing cave hotels in Cappadocia, Turkey!  Other places you can experience caves include from Campi Ya Kanzi in Kenya – there is a superb underground cave near the lodge in the Hills!

Houseboats are a great way to experience a night or two on the water – if you love to sleep to the sound of waves lapping outside, there are plenty of exciting adventures to choose from!  A favourite in Vietnam is to spend a night on a Junk Boat in Halong Bay. There are also lots of overnight river boat options along the Mekong and Yangtze rivers in South East Asia.  Cruise through the tranquil backwaters of Kerala in India and combine these houseboats with an amazing foodie holiday!

Under water in the Indian Ocean and Arabia are some amazing underwater dining experiences, eat your meals next to a giant fish tank at Burj Al Arab (Dubai) or head to The Maldives for a selection of hotels with underwater restaurants and amazing water villas where you can sleep just a step away from your own ‘fish tank’!  New on Pemba Island, Tanzania is The Manta Resort where you can actually sleep under the water in your submerged room and watch the fish swim around you as you drift off to sleep!

Live like a Maharajah in India staying in a luxury palace!  There are plenty of options around Asia and Arabia to stay in a palace – and if you want your own castle in Europe have a look at a private villa or house for your family or group of friends.

New and quirky places are opening all the time around the world – if you see something that takes your fancy, please get in touch and ask us to incorporate it into a tailor made holiday for you!  01728 748209

Our honeymoon to Chile & Argentina was smoothly organised – our wishes were listened to and met, and changes were absorbed and dealt with, without fuss. Excellent service throughout. Highlights were Easter Island and the Atacama Desert … Travel With Jules took the time to get the details perfected - Jules listened to my requests, sorted out an itinerary, worked on the changes and then dealt with further changes (of mind) without any fuss. A first class service and highly recommended. This was a honeymoon trip to Chile and Argentina and it was a truly wonderful holiday.

The holiday was just incredible and couldn't have been any better in our wildest dreams. Thank you for all your assistance and your genius in putting this itinerary together for us to perfectly match what we wanted. Giraffe Manor was exceptional and even now feels like we were in a dream. It was great to know that every step of our holiday was taken care of including visiting our fostered elephant and meeting the last male Northern White Rhino on the planet.

Thank you for all your hard work in putting together our tailor made holiday to Tanzania. Accommodation throughout was at least very good, sometimes really excellent. The Old Boma hotel where the service was super - one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in anywhere in the world Hassan our safari guide was first class and very helpful. The Bush Rover camping was fun ... for one night!

As always you did everything to such a high standard (We wouldn't expect anything else from you though!!) Where in the world can you visit a zen garden in the morning and meet with the head resident priest for a chat, see a very large cat being walked on a collar and lead through the bamboo groves and see the craziness of a robot cabaret........... that would be Japan!!!! A massive thank you to Jules and Mags for yet another fabulously arranged holiday. If you're thinking of going to Japan then book with Travel with Jules, the organisation is excellent, the information you receive is comprehensive and very detailed, you can't go wrong.

Thank you so much for organising my trip to Australia for me! I was very unsure about travelling alone but Mags met me and talked me through the things I needed to do, such as getting travel insurance and a visa. The group I met in Alice Springs and travelled with were great fun and the tour leader was lovely. I really loved everything, it was all amazing!

What can I say? You did it again! From the night I arrived, being welcomed back to Hemingways in Nairobi (I felt like the King of Scotland again!), to the day I left everything was a complete delight. Elephant Watch Camp is lovely, the staff there are superb. They know all the elephants by name and there were around 9 families in the area, Saba had arranged a surprise sleep out for me with the warriors! I had some amazing leopard sightings around Samburu too ... all in all very sad to leave there.

We got back from our holiday to Sweden yesterday and I just wanted to say thank you, it was great! The Tree Hotel was fabulous but it is a bit of a hike up hill in the dark on slippery walkways! Talking to the other guests, the blue cone room we had may not be a […]

We would like to express our appreciation for the organising of the wonderful holiday to India. We were looked after like 'Sahib and Sahiba' from our arrival until our departure! A huge thank you to yourself and Nikhil at Western & Oriental for our experience of a lifetime.

Many of our travellers on Route 66 detour to the Grand Canyon – this ‘cowboy sleep out’ option is enjoyed from Grand Canyon Ranch at the west rim:  On the Cowboy Sleep Out, the best point is that this is run by a real cowboy.  Not the entertainer who tells stories over supper in the […]

Our holiday to East Africa was perfect in every way. The early morning safari's were a special occasion...sitting in the middle of the plains surrounded by wildebeest, eating a cooked breakfast freshly prepared by the ranger, watching the sunrise is a truly unforgettable experience. Jules, thank you so much for giving us the experience and adventure of a lifetime. We will remember it always!

The tree hotel in Sweden was fantastic, we loved it and stayed in the Mirror Cube, when we woke up there were 12 reindeer asleep below the cube. Loved all excursions and cooking on an open fire in the forest in the snow was something else!

One of the things I have come to love about you, Jules, is that you listen and take on board what makes me tick, and then tailor the holiday to fit me, not just try to convince me to fit a holiday in a brochure!
