Solo Travel

Bespoke solo travel – holidays for single travellers.

With many years personal experience of solo travel at Travel With Jules we know only too well the problems associated with booking a holiday, especially as a solo traveller!  Travelling in Africa Jules soon learnt a few tricks … always wear a wedding ring, talk about your husband, etc., to avoid unwanted attention as you sit alone in a beach bar wanting to watch the sunset in peace trying to avoid being pestered by the local ‘beach boys’!!  Another problem often facing solo travellers is the dreaded ‘single supplement’ on hotel rooms which often seems to double the price of the holiday.  Having first hand experience as a single female we are very happy to help you find a suitable holiday, we have a lot of solo ladies who book regularly with us (and men of course!).

Even if you just want some winter sun or a summer break and need us to find hotels who will waive the single supplement or have any special offers, let us take the worry about of booking it all for you.  Spa breaks, wellness retreats or yoga holidays are also popular with solo travellers.

There are many reasons why people travel on their own, most really enjoy it – meeting new people, enjoying new culture and relishing in the challenge of independent travel.  So even if you are an experienced world traveller who would like a tailor made holiday, perhaps with a private guide for example to explore the rainforests of Madagascar or trek Machu Pichu, enjoy a one on one walking safari in Africa or travel by train around India then we can help with that.  Let us book your flights, accommodation, travel arrangements, maybe you want to hire a car and do your own thing?  That’s all no problem!

Zambia-Naomi-walking-guide

If you are not used to travelling alone but want to embark on a round the world trip or spend your redundancy money trekking round South-East Asia because you wish you had done it when you were younger, we can arrange that too. Gone are the time when ‘GAP year’ travel was just for those at University!  ‘Adult GAPs’ are becoming more and more popular and we can team you up with other adventurers joining groups which are fantastic value for money too.

There are lots of options for spending some time with local families and in villages taking part in volunteer projects if you want to learn more about the culture around you and give something back to your host country when you travel. Some holidays such as expeditions to Antarctica offer the opportunity to become involved in conservation projects such as Penguin population mapping.

Long haul, consider pre-booking things like hop on hop off buses in Australia and New Zealand or travel passes, for example in Europe there are options for rail cards that allow you to spend weeks using the trains as you wish.

If you want to join a group then there are endless options for escorted tours and sightseeing.  You may have a particular interest such as Art, Music or Botany, to name just a few – there are lots of special interest tours.  We can find you an escorted tour group with a knowledgeable guide who specialises in your particular area of interest.  Take a look at the Special Interest Groups section or ask us for advice.  We know of companies who run escorted tours specifically just for single travellers.  Some are travelling alone because they have no choice, others travel on their own as they like different holidays to their spouses. Whatever the reason, there are usually no single supplements imposed and you have the services of an experienced tour leader who makes sure everyone is involved in the group and doesn’t feel excluded.  Ask us also about single sex holidays.

If you are a single traveller wanting to join an activity or adventure holiday, then look no further!  As a specialists in adventure and wildlife travel, we can find you the perfect activity holiday for you to join with and some of these group departures are designated as ‘solo departures’ and will be made up of mainly solo like minded travellers.  There are group holidays for walking, cycling, sightseeing, safaris, sailing and culture.  Some groups are made up of mostly solo travellers so you are sharing your experience with other singles along the way.

If you are a single traveller wanting to go on an African Safari, we can find you a fabulous group safari to join, depending which country you would like to visit or if there is any particular wildlife experience you would like to do. Having done ‘solo Africa’ myself for many years, this is my specialist area so please don’t feel intimidated or worried about travelling to Africa alone, once you get there you will feel anything but as the friendly people of Africa will make you feel at home straight away!  Read here about how Naomi found her first time in Zambia travelling on her own!!

Take a look through the experiences pages for some inspiration and get in touch.  All the suggested itineraries can be done as a solo tailor made holiday or you may be able to join a group. Get in touch for help with planning your next solo holiday!

You listened to what I wanted to do and see, and found me a package that delivered exactly that. Highlights included staying in villages, Chandelao Garh - with a tour of surrounding hamlets, Jojawr Ravla - with a Ganesh procession complete with powder paint throwing and a trip on a local railway where the train stopped just for me to take a picture of a Banyan tree! Visiting a Marwari horse stud in Jodhpur; shopping in Jaipur. The guide was so knowledgeable about the area, and really good at finding out what we were interested in and tailoring the holiday accordingly.

From the beginning the professionalism and communication from Travel With Jules was brilliant and I couldn't have asked for more. I really believe I'll never go through another travel agent again. It was the most amazing holiday, seeing magnificent animals, I had a tear when I saw the blue whale! You arranged an amazing trip, thank you so much.
Sarah Bradshaw – Azores Whale Watching (May 2017)

Bruges is very interesting city. Enjoyed a boat trip. Also going to Ypres for the Menin Gate ceremony at 8.o.clock. Very moving.

I booked my trip in the UK through 'Travel With Jules' to avoid having to send large sums of money to a foreign bank account. Using a UK agent obviously adds to the cost, but I considered it well worth it for financial security, and certainty that there would actually be someone waiting for me when I stepped off the plane. I visited Lobeke National Park and Sangha Lodge in Dzanga Sanga National Park. Amazing sightings of forest wildlife including elephants, lowland Gorillas, sitatunga, Mangabeys, forest hogs and stunning bird life.
Andrew Sneddon – Cameroon & CAR (Feb 2017)

Just to say thank you very much for organising my travels to see my family and changing my return flight when I needed to. Everything worked out very well . Coming back from New Zealand was the quickest I have ever done and helped a lot with the jet lag.
Mary MacKinlay – New Zealand (Dec 16 – Mar 17)

This trip was going to tick off another 4 new States for me making 49 so far (only Hawaii to do … next year, I hope!). Everyone was so friendly and welcoming! A first for me was staying in small bed & breakfast accommodation … I loved it! As usual, the worst bit was having to come home and it’s HUGE thank-you to Mags and Jules for organising another memorable trip.

I felt like the King of Scotland again! Another amazing holiday to Africa .. thoroughly enjoyed everything in Zimbabwe and already want to go back again! In Mana Pools I got up very close on walking safaris to a pack of wild dogs and saw "Boswell" the 50 year old elephant who stands on his back legs to feed!

All I can say is AWESOME!!!!!! The staff and other visitors at The Body Holiday were so friendly, I didn't feel uncomfortable as a solo traveller (after the first fifteen minutes of watching others obviously!) at all. The hosted communal evening meals were lively, friendly, interesting discussions with perfect strangers, several of whom I subsequently spent meal times with. The service was fantastic, the staff were friendly and I will definitely be looking to travel there again. I would also like to say thank you for putting me on to such a wonderful spot and I would love it if more places were so open to solo travellers and accommodating to different needs. All in all I would score it 10 out of 10!

Thank you so much for organising my trip to Australia for me! I was very unsure about travelling alone but Mags met me and talked me through the things I needed to do, such as getting travel insurance and a visa. The group I met in Alice Springs and travelled with were great fun and the tour leader was lovely. I really loved everything, it was all amazing!
Becky Baker – Australia (Feb – March 2016)

What can I say? You did it again! From the night I arrived, being welcomed back to Hemingways in Nairobi (I felt like the King of Scotland again!), to the day I left everything was a complete delight. Elephant Watch Camp is lovely, the staff there are superb. They know all the elephants by name and there were around 9 families in the area, Saba had arranged a surprise sleep out for me with the warriors! I had some amazing leopard sightings around Samburu too ... all in all very sad to leave there.
Wilf Graham – Elephant Watch, Kenya (March 2016)

The entire trip and booking process has been a highlight! From talking to Jules on the phone trying to decide where to go to finding out the actual experience was exactly as she described it would be. Wildlife, nature, good weather, friendly welcomes…fantastic food… perfect flights… everything! Going to Zambia in the Emerald season is a delight...
Naomi Delorme – Zambia (Feb – March 2016)

What can I say ... you did it again! I loved every minute of my Kenya adventure. The Born Free Foundation anniversary safari was superb. We spent loads of time with Virginia McKenna whilst at Elsa's Kopje, she was full of 'hidden facts' about the lives of the Adamsons and I really enjoyed her company. Amboseli was fabulous. In Nairobi I enjoyed my visit to Daphne Sheldrick's Elephant Orphans and seeing my adopted baby later in the afternoon. So thank you again for your superb organisation and personalised 'conservation' based safari, I'm retiring soon so look out I will be travelling even more!
Wilf Graham – Kenya (Oct-Nov 2014)

I cannot thank you enough for your help in putting my recent trip to Canada together - everything was so easy for me. I will be singing your praises to everyone and would certainly like to travel more by train in the future myself. Thank you again.

The arrangements you set up were impeccable. From the moment I walked through arrivals at Delhi airport until departure ten days later, everything went without a hitch and took all the hassle out of being a single traveller.

I had a great time in South Africa. The group were very friendly and a wide range of ages. We had a very good tour leader and tour guide. The leader was very pleased with us as a group ie we did as we were told and didn’t hold the coach up! Also we all […]

Just a quick one to say thank you for organising the safari. It was fantastic fun. I saw elephants, white & black rhino, giraffes, lions, buffalo and all of the other assorted wildebeest etc. Kariega Game Reserve is great, and it was especially nice that most meals were communal and the rangers joined us. I […]

The holiday was very enjoyable if a bit hot – 40 one day!! Nice group of people with a very knowledgeable tour guide (Frank) who was bilingual which was very useful.  The hotel (Mijas)was very good with excellent air conditioning. The staff were very helpful.   The optional excursions (Gibraltar and to Granada and Alhambra Palace) were […]

Wow, what a trip, it was absolutely wonderful. I am absolutely amazed how few people know about Reunion. I still am shell shocked by the beauty of the island ... tropical birds, rainforests, trekking volcanoes, snorkelling coral reefs ...

I virtually followed Route 66 from beginning to end as laid out in the EZ66 Guidebook that you recommended, and got a real feel for mid 20th century America. I also managed to pack a lot in as well as the route itself. I went on an Architectural tour of Chicago, up to the top […]

Maui (Hawaii) was absolutely fabulous. It’s a smallish island that is packed with everything you might want in a holiday. From rough, desolate volcanic scenery (watching the sunrise on Haleakala Crater was spectacular) to lush green mountains and gorges full of waterfalls and rock pools. Black, red and white sand beaches – the glitzy, touristy […]

Well I'm now in Chicago and have had an awesome time. It's been full on and clocked up around eight thousand miles. Thank you again you're a travellers champion!

The team at the hotel were warm, friendly and keen to ensure that everything I wanted was catered for...You also have the option of cruising around the local markets and enjoying talking with locals, or jumping on a bicycle and hitting the beach or going further afield. Sounds busy and it is, but in the best possible way!! And as ever, thanks to Julie's seamless organisation, all I had to do is turn up with passport and sunglasses :)
Jim Sibree-Paul – Vietnam (Feb 2014)

A special thank you for organising both my visits this year to Namibia and introducing me to Conservancy Safaris.  They were such a privilege to travel with, especially this last trip where Garth personally guided me to the most remote areas I have ever been to.  This adventure with Conservancy Safaris was amongst my best […]

Iceland was amazing, the scenery was stunning and the geysers & glaciers took my breath away. The only thing was that I wanted to stay for longer! Thank you for all your help, you made things so easy for me. I'll be in touch for my next trip once I've saved some more money! Thanks again.
Kerrie Parfitt – Iceland (July 2012)

All my flights were arranged efficiently, airport transfers were organised and I quickly met up with the group on my arrival in Marrakech. I would happily use 'Travel with Jules' to book future holidays.

Julie sent me all my details quickly (I booked within a week of travel!) which made it easy to sort out my documents and what I needed to take with me and she was always on hand for any questions I had which gave me confidence before I set off. I had a great holiday cycling in Slovakia and Poland and would like to think I'll be doing a similar holiday very soon!
Kendal Harrison – Poland & Slovakia (Aug 2011)

To lift a business contact and develop the relationship into friendship takes a special talent and creates an important bond with the customer. It has been a pleasure for me to deal with someone so proficient in her expertise as Julie.

One of the things I have come to love about you, Jules, is that you listen and take on board what makes me tick, and then tailor the holiday to fit me, not just try to convince me to fit a holiday in a brochure!
