Grasslands

The most famous of the animal movements through grasslands is the Great Wildebeest Migration which takes place on the African Plains.  Here, the biggest concentration of grass living animals are on a continuous cycle through Kenya and Tanzania, following the rains and the best feeding grounds to support their young and being followed by many predators, makes for one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

It may surprise you to know that grasses provide food for most of the world’s land species and 10,000 varieties of grass cover a quarter of all vegetated land. It is a plant that keeps on growing, even though it’s constantly being eaten and because it grows from it’s base it is always active.

Low level in the grasses there are lizards and insects which provide food for predators above such as larger birds and reptiles. Termites are amongst the most successful of insects living on the grasslands, in places like the savannah of Brazil there are more termite mounds per acre than anywhere else!  These are followed of course by the weird looking Anteater and other mammals.  On the vast plains and prairie lands of North America temperatures can drop massively below freezing but Bison survive here in huge herds, such as in Yellowstone National Park.

Tribal people who live on these grasslands have adapted tracking skills like no other.  The bushmen of the Kalahari in Botswana are amongst the best in the world and rely on the animals of the grasslands for food and clothing.  People work together with animals in cases such as following the Honeyguide bird to locate wild honey supplies.

When rivers flood or heavy rain falls, flooded grasslands can attract many migrating species of wildlife.  The Pantanal in Brazil is really a flooded savannah and here you can find Jaguar, Capybara, Giant Otters and many other intriguing species.  Grasslands and Savannah are ideal for horses and as such they are ridden by local people in regions such as Mongolia, Australia, Brazil and Botswana and there are plenty of horse riding holidays available to many destinations in the world. Throughout India, the grasslands of the parks and reserves are home to the beautiful tiger.

So, if a horse riding holiday, African Safari or South American savannah exploration appeal to you and you want to learn more about the varied grasslands of the world, give me a call to put together the perfect holiday …… Where in the world would you rather be?

Thank you so much for your hard work putting together our fabulous three generation family safari to Northern Tanzania. We loved everything and the highlight was our private Serengeti Camp. We all had an AMAZING time at our private camp in the Serengeti. Our hosts at the camp were all fantastic. We saw an incredible amount of wildlife and the migration was something else, we were surrounded 360 degrees by wildebeest!

I felt like the King of Scotland again! Another amazing holiday to Africa .. thoroughly enjoyed everything in Zimbabwe and already want to go back again! In Mana Pools I got up very close on walking safaris to a pack of wild dogs and saw "Boswell" the 50 year old elephant who stands on his back legs to feed!

Thank you for all your hard work in putting together our tailor made holiday to Tanzania. Accommodation throughout was at least very good, sometimes really excellent. The Old Boma hotel where the service was super - one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in anywhere in the world Hassan our safari guide was first class and very helpful. The Bush Rover camping was fun ... for one night!

Thank you again for your help and support with organising the trip. It truly was spectacular and such an amazing place. The aurora display we got on the 3 nights in Dawson was out of this world at times the entire sky was filled above us and no lens would have been wide enough to capture it

What can I say? You did it again! From the night I arrived, being welcomed back to Hemingways in Nairobi (I felt like the King of Scotland again!), to the day I left everything was a complete delight. Elephant Watch Camp is lovely, the staff there are superb. They know all the elephants by name and there were around 9 families in the area, Saba had arranged a surprise sleep out for me with the warriors! I had some amazing leopard sightings around Samburu too ... all in all very sad to leave there.

Jean and I are fairly familiar with safari travel and Zambia would be the first place that I would recommend to any newcomers. The help of the Africa Tours reception on arrival in Lusaka which you arranged for us is a bonus. One of the wildlife highlights was seeing a pack of wild dogs on their kill.

The entire trip and booking process has been a highlight! From talking to Jules on the phone trying to decide where to go to finding out the actual experience was exactly as she described it would be. Wildlife, nature, good weather, friendly welcomes…fantastic food… perfect flights… everything! Going to Zambia in the Emerald season is a delight...

Giving us a wealth of knowledge from her years spent working in Africa, Jules soon put together the perfect holiday for us. Just back home, the holiday already seems like ages ago but we really did have the trip of a lifetime! Thank you Jules for your arrangements and making it all work so well for us (especially talking to us whilst we were flying from the Mara, not sure which air strip to get off the plane!!)

I can’t praise Dinknesh Tours enough – they went out of their way to look after us and we had a fabulous wildlife guide.  Particularly enjoyed the Simian and Bale Mountains and the Gelada Baboons.  Bale Mountain Lodge was lovely but the rest of the accommodation (and generally throughout Ethiopia) is very basic and not […]

We really did have an amazing time in Kenya - I really appreciate your work in organising everything for us, it was fantastic!! The effort to make my birthday special was lovely. We feel we have seen animals in the wild that are not overly harassed and negatively impacted by human activity, this is very important to us.

Thank you for all your help through the planning and booking over the last year or so for our honeymoon to Kenya & Mozambique. It was a truly magical experience and one we will never forget. Thanks for all your help in creating some fantastic memories for us! Lake Nakuru was stunning. After a boat trip on Lake Naivasha we had a lovely afternoon and evening at Loldia house - weird sitting reading whilst buffalo and hippo are so close! Karen Blixen Camp was a real safari experience. We loved it here the most and were well looked after. Governors hot air balloon ride over the Mara - AMAZING!!

Julie organised our holiday to Zambia which more than met our requirements - the accommodation was excellent (we stayed with Norman Carr Safaris in South Luangwa, Mayukuyuku in Kafue and Waterberry at Livingstone), our guides for safari and birdwatching were the best available and all travel arrangements went smoothly. Julie's attention to detail and knowledge of Zambia meant that our individual wishes were met throughout our holiday. Thank you very much!
Gwynfryn & Kathryn – Zambia (February 2013)
March 1, 2013

We are so grateful for all of Julie's advice having just come back from an absolutely fantastic holiday to Kenya. She went to huge lengths to provide us with different options that fitted our budget and wish list, and answered our endless questions with patience and enthusiasm. We have already recommended Julie to some of our friends and will carry on recommending her to lots more.
Anne & Paul – Kenya (September 2012)
October 13, 2012

Julie's knowledge and passion for Zambia was amazing, her knowledge meant that we were able to have "real" conversations about our trip and make the right decisions meaning that we had an unbelievable holiday. We can't wait to go back to Africa and when we do it will be through Travel With Jules.
Rob Shave – Zambia (Aug 2011)

One of the things I have come to love about you, Jules, is that you listen and take on board what makes me tick, and then tailor the holiday to fit me, not just try to convince me to fit a holiday in a brochure!
