African Safaris

Tailor made African Safaris – Families, groups, solo travel & honeymoons to Africa.

So you know you want to go on a safari but what now?  With years of first hand experience working in Africa and selling holidays and adventures there, we are well placed to help you find the perfect safari .. contact us for the perfect bespoke safari or honeymoon to Africa – impartial, honest advice!

Africa truly awakens your senses, there is something earthy and primeval about being in the heart of the bush, listening to every snapping twig or munch of an elephant feeding outside your room ….

Jules spent six years working in Africa ….. My recommendations to awaken YOUR senses would be to smell the earth in the morning after the rain … taste the home baked bread and steaks straight from your camp fire … hear the roar of a lion carry miles through the African night …. Feel the breeze in your face as you stand on a hill top and sense an incoming storm ….see the sunrise over a mist covered plain and experience the waking of another African day – step outside your comfort zone and immerse yourself into the magical other world that is Africa! Having lived in Africa for many years I am well placed to advise you on your safari holiday to Africa and the best way to get to Africa from the UK.

To experience the real Africa, you need to be in a small group or with a private guide, preferably in your own vehicle or open sided jeep and have the chance to get out on foot too!  African Safaris can take place not just by vehicle but on a walking safari, horseback safari, boating safari or even by train or air!  Safari is Swahili for ‘Journey’ … so let us take you on an unforgettable Journey to Africa and design a bespoke safari to fit your dream.

Yes, the Masai Mara of Kenya and South Africa’s Kruger National Park are iconic and certainly give the first time safari goer a great taste of Africa.  But please ask me to advise you on what is best for you. There are a huge range of camps and lodges to choose from and an equally confusing number of tour operators or safari companies to book with!  Depending on the number in your party, their ages and interests and the time of year you are going, many options are available to you. There are also specific African Safaris for honeymoons, families, single travellers or adventure groups. Gamewatchers Adventure Camping in Kenya offers an affordable, authentic option.

There are often long stay or honeymoon offers for African Safari camps and beach lodges, check out the offers page for more information. African Safari Honeymoons are very popular but the choice is huge!  Take a look at our dedicated ‘experience’ page for safari honeymoons to give you a taste of what you can do and get in touch for me to tailor the perfect African honeymoon.

We recommend getting off the beaten track and experiencing real Africa.  Use small, luxury tented camps and you will find that there is nothing like watching wildlife with no surrounding human noise or light pollution and sitting round a camp fire under the stars, with the noises of the night around you as you sleep under canvas…. ‘night safaris’ are also a unique experience, only offered in a few places – see the nocturnal world of wildlife for yourself! My personal recommendation for the best safari is Zambia – gorgeous tented camps, deep in the wilderness, walking, night drives, leopards, wild dogs, friendly people and stunning scenery, far from the crowds.  Another great option and an up and coming safari destination is Mozambique, in particular Gorongosa which is fabulous for a ‘days of old’ adventure explorer type safari.  Botswana offers the watery wonderland of the Okavango Delta and the fascinating salt pans and deserts of the Kalahari.

Botwana-(Motswiri)-Giraffe-

East Africa is always a good starting point, but there are quieter options than the main parks and reserves – just because you’ve not seen them on the TV it doesn’t mean they are not as good!  In fact many of the lesser known areas are much better because of that – fewer visitors means a much better safari experience for you with less vehicles and tourists around.  There are also private reserves and conservancy areas around parks which provide essential income for local tribal communities by paying them a lease on their land, employing them in tourism and supporting conservation projects too, by having their tented camps on land which is locally owned and has no permanent footprint. If you want to see the Great Wildebeest Migration, ask us about the best time of year and location to get there.  In Tanzania, you may also want to head for the southern parks, away from the crowds and enjoy boat safaris in the Selous or some bush and beach time on the coast at Saadani National Park.

If you are an experienced safari goer and Africa addict (like me!) and want to experience something different, check out the newly emerging destinations such as Central African Republic, Congo and Sudan. Remote and challenging they provide a glimpse of wild areas as they were many decades ago.  Keep an eye on safaris to Burundi too!

Of course you don’t have to go to East Africa, we have arranged safaris in the past for first time Africa visitors to Zambia, Botswana and other countries and they have been equally as smitten with it all as I was all those years back!  Certainly in my view, a safari in Zambia or Botswana will offer top class guiding and superb camps and wildlife away from the crowds of the East African parks.  Five star luxury fly in safaris do come at a price, but it’s money well spent to give you the best safari experience you can have.

Jules is an African Safari Specialist  having lived and worked in Africa for many years and with her zoological background can advise you on the best places to see a particular species of animal, or catch the best viewings of migrations, tell you when the many different breeding seasons occur, find out when hatching turtles can be seen, arrange gorilla trekking, or answer any other of the many questions I’m sure you have regarding the best time and place to go to for your perfect bespoke African Safari!

And after all that time in the bush, take a break and wash off the safari dust!  There are some beautiful beach lodges, luxury spas and a hundred friendly places in Africa to enjoy the slow pace of life and unwind ….. try Mozambique, Lake Malawi or the Indian Ocean islands for starters!

African Safaris can be tailored for just you as an individual, couple or family, you can join a group ‘mobile’ safari camping along the way or you can fly in to luxury camps and lodges deep in the wilderness areas.  There are safaris which are mainly jeep based, those which concentrate on walking and being in the bush far from roads and light pollution, even sleeping under the stars.  Some safaris involve boating or canoeing and some can be taken after dark, watching nocturnal wildlife on a night drive. If it’s a family african safari you are looking for check out some of the options on the family holidays page or get in touch as I know the best places to send you depending on the age of your children, time of year and budget.

Ask us for the best safari option to suit your personal needs.  Where you go depends on the time of year, what particular species or type of safari interests you and of course your budget!  If you are travelling alone don’t let that be an obstacle – Jules own first safaris in Africa were as a single female traveller we are well placed to find you the best way to find an African Safari for solo travellers.

This Safari was a repeat visit to a country after many years of safaris elsewhere in Africa and India, and it did not disappoint. In fact I am happy to say it was probably the best ever I can remember (and if Jules was responsible for the sole use of vehicle and guide at both Mara North and Valley camps - thanks for using your influence with the Kicheche Camps!). Using the smaller camps in the Masai conservancies of Mara North and Naboisho meant low vehicle numbers and sightings were often enjoyed in splendid isolation, with the freedom to drive off road too. I have just returned from experiencing the most perfect adventure....

Our whole trip was expertly planned which was amazing considering we were in a different hotel every night. In fact every hotel was superb, this wasn't just the facilities and breakfasts but the first class attention we got at each one. This wasn't luck, it was your expert knowledge that meant we were in the best locations on our route. There is nothing we would change from our trip apart from going again…it was perfect!! Thank you.

I booked my trip in the UK through 'Travel With Jules' to avoid having to send large sums of money to a foreign bank account. Using a UK agent obviously adds to the cost, but I considered it well worth it for financial security, and certainty that there would actually be someone waiting for me when I stepped off the plane. I visited Lobeke National Park and Sangha Lodge in Dzanga Sanga National Park. Amazing sightings of forest wildlife including elephants, lowland Gorillas, sitatunga, Mangabeys, forest hogs and stunning bird life.

Thank you so much for your hard work putting together our fabulous three generation family safari to Northern Tanzania. We loved everything and the highlight was our private Serengeti Camp. We all had an AMAZING time at our private camp in the Serengeti. Our hosts at the camp were all fantastic. We saw an incredible amount of wildlife and the migration was something else, we were surrounded 360 degrees by wildebeest!

We had the most fantastic time ever in South Africa! Horizon Horseback Adventures were brilliant and we would highly recommended to others. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they really looked after the guests. The horses were all well cared for and fantastic to ride. The food was brilliant and everyone was so friendly. […]

The holiday was just incredible and couldn't have been any better in our wildest dreams. Thank you for all your assistance and your genius in putting this itinerary together for us to perfectly match what we wanted. Giraffe Manor was exceptional and even now feels like we were in a dream. It was great to know that every step of our holiday was taken care of including visiting our fostered elephant and meeting the last male Northern White Rhino on the planet.

I felt like the King of Scotland again! Another amazing holiday to Africa .. thoroughly enjoyed everything in Zimbabwe and already want to go back again! In Mana Pools I got up very close on walking safaris to a pack of wild dogs and saw "Boswell" the 50 year old elephant who stands on his back legs to feed!

Thank you for all your hard work in putting together our tailor made holiday to Tanzania. Accommodation throughout was at least very good, sometimes really excellent. The Old Boma hotel where the service was super - one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in anywhere in the world Hassan our safari guide was first class and very helpful. The Bush Rover camping was fun ... for one night!

We are back safely and rested after an AMAZING holiday to Namibia. We had such a lovely time. The whole trip was perfectly planned and it went really well - so thank you. Everything was a highlight! The self drive was great. Being back in Africa - the landscape, the animals, the people. We had time together - that was the best of all, thank you. Service rating excellent! You were flexible and patient when our plans/ needs changed. You were always accessible and helpful.

Excellent driving infrastructure and incredibly good value for money. In hindsight we should have had a bigger car! We did enjoy our stay in South Africa and can highly recommend many of the hotels and guest houses, staggering scenery, lovely helpful people, incredibly sophisticated cooking (we didn’t have any meals that would be bettered in London!).

The holiday was AMAZING, Gambia is such a great destination, thank you for recommending we visit and putting together a wonderful varied experience for us, we loved it all! Fathala Wildlife Reserve in Senegal was incredible, the ferry transfers were great fun and an insight to local life and we were well looked after on both journeys. The Mandina Lodges were stunning and the floating lodge was lovely.

What can I say? You did it again! From the night I arrived, being welcomed back to Hemingways in Nairobi (I felt like the King of Scotland again!), to the day I left everything was a complete delight. Elephant Watch Camp is lovely, the staff there are superb. They know all the elephants by name and there were around 9 families in the area, Saba had arranged a surprise sleep out for me with the warriors! I had some amazing leopard sightings around Samburu too ... all in all very sad to leave there.
Wilf Graham – Elephant Watch, Kenya (March 2016)
March 29, 2016

Jean and I are fairly familiar with safari travel and Zambia would be the first place that I would recommend to any newcomers. The help of the Africa Tours reception on arrival in Lusaka which you arranged for us is a bonus. One of the wildlife highlights was seeing a pack of wild dogs on their kill.
Nick, Jean and Jackie – Zambia (March 2016)
March 29, 2016

The entire trip and booking process has been a highlight! From talking to Jules on the phone trying to decide where to go to finding out the actual experience was exactly as she described it would be. Wildlife, nature, good weather, friendly welcomes…fantastic food… perfect flights… everything! Going to Zambia in the Emerald season is a delight...
Naomi Delorme – Zambia (Feb – March 2016)

Giving us a wealth of knowledge from her years spent working in Africa, Jules soon put together the perfect holiday for us. Just back home, the holiday already seems like ages ago but we really did have the trip of a lifetime! Thank you Jules for your arrangements and making it all work so well for us (especially talking to us whilst we were flying from the Mara, not sure which air strip to get off the plane!!)
David & Sue Hughes – Kenya (Feb – March 2016)

Your impressive local knowledge filled us with confidence. Your interpretation of our specification was exacting. Travel with Jules did an incredible job. We are very grateful for the level of personal attention and customer care you offered us. There were no lowlights – it was ALL highlights! We came home promising to return to Africa....

Thanks for organising our tailor made fly drive to South Africa we had a great time! the safari at Msenge Bush Lodge in Pumba Game Reserve was fabulous a great way end the holiday – saw all the big 5 – had a great cottage probably the best in the lodge. Oh I should mention the gallons of wine and champagne we consumed (especially the Cape Town and Stellenbosch area) taking many purchases with us for use along the route!!

We just returned from a beautiful trip to Ethiopia, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for organising it and sorry for the late changes we made to the programme! Simien Mountains, Lalibela and Bale Mountains were beautiful as were the Gelada baboons, the Ibex, incredible amount of native birds and the Ethiopian wolf

You worked really hard to meet budget and needs of our group changing itinerary to accommodate our birding safari in Tanzania. The large game viewing was brilliant with hundreds of elephants and several good sightings of lions and we even had cheetahs.
Birding Group Safari – Tanzania (November 2015)

I think we must have got caught in a time warp as the time seemed to stretch away into the distance. Thank you so much for suggesting Zambia and Malawi to us in the first place and organising everything, including the unique wedding ceremony in South Luangwa!

Just a quick email to say we both really enjoyed our trip to South Africa! We loved everything but feel like we need another break as packed such a lot in!! What can I say ... you did it again! I loved every minute of my Kenya adventure. The Born Free Foundation anniversary safari was superb. We spent loads of time with Virginia McKenna whilst at Elsa's Kopje, she was full of 'hidden facts' about the lives of the Adamsons and I really enjoyed her company. Amboseli was fabulous. In Nairobi I enjoyed my visit to Daphne Sheldrick's Elephant Orphans and seeing my adopted baby later in the afternoon. So thank you again for your superb organisation and personalised 'conservation' based safari, I'm retiring soon so look out I will be travelling even more!
Wilf Graham – Kenya (Oct-Nov 2014)

November 30, 2014

I can’t praise Dinknesh Tours enough – they went out of their way to look after us and we had a fabulous wildlife guide.  Particularly enjoyed the Simian and Bale Mountains and the Gelada Baboons.  Bale Mountain Lodge was lovely but the rest of the accommodation (and generally throughout Ethiopia) is very basic and not […]

The reason so many of your clients are happy is so down to you and your knowledge and putting the right people with the right tour/destination/ground handler ... that is not easy as we (ground agents and lodge owners) rely so much on that. Hats off to you! You are one of the best in the business at doing that as far as I am concerned. Thanks for the great client feedback!

September 25, 2014

We had a fabulous time in Zambia and Malawi, thank you.  The safari (Thornicroft Lodge) was amazing and we saw everything we wished to and the safari guide was excellent.  You were right on the length of time staying there, it was just right. Malawi again was lovely (Norman Carr Cottage, Lake Malawi), great hosts and a […]

September 23, 2014

Our holiday to East Africa was perfect in every way. The early morning safari's were a special occasion...sitting in the middle of the plains surrounded by wildebeest, eating a cooked breakfast freshly prepared by the ranger, watching the sunrise is a truly unforgettable experience. Jules, thank you so much for giving us the experience and adventure of a lifetime. We will remember it always!
Colin & Mel – Tanzania (August 2014)
September 22, 2014

Just a quick one to say thank you for organising the safari. It was fantastic fun. I saw elephants, white & black rhino, giraffes, lions, buffalo and all of the other assorted wildebeest etc. Kariega Game Reserve is great, and it was especially nice that most meals were communal and the rangers joined us. I […]

For the last three years we have been using Jules to arrange our annual winter long haul holidays and have enjoyed travelling with someone else doing the organising in the full knowledge that should a problem occur we have a reliable point of contact who ensures that our enjoyment of the holiday isn't in any way spoiled. I would thoroughly recommend using 'Travel with Jules' to anyone contemplating wishing to travel on a wildlife & sightseeing adventure!

Great trip and all your arrangements just fell into place perfectly. We saw everything that we could expect to see (including the longed for leopards!), staff were all extremely helpful and the accommodation just at the level we had hoped for on safari in remote places (stayed at Kapani, Kakuli & Chongwe).  We particularly enjoyed […]

While all of our hotels were beyond wonderful, Senegal is quite culturally different from ours (USA). Many roads are still sand and unpaved- though a good part of the trip to the delta was on the highway- at least one hour was a short cut through quite a barren area, little villages along the way […]

April 8, 2014

A huge thank you for organising and booking our holiday to Zambia and Malawi, Norman Carr Safaris, what can we say, WOW what a great company. For the first two nights we were up graded to their 'flag ship' new camp at Chinzombo! We left with very fond memories and we really do have Africa in our hearts now. We really did 'live our dream' so thank you for making it happen.
Phil & Sue Fenning – Zambia & Malawi (Feb 2014)
March 14, 2014

We really did have an amazing time in Kenya - I really appreciate your work in organising everything for us, it was fantastic!! The effort to make my birthday special was lovely. We feel we have seen animals in the wild that are not overly harassed and negatively impacted by human activity, this is very important to us.
Aimee & Hazel – Kenya (Jan 2014)
February 21, 2014

Our packed holiday included fly-camping and bucket showers, walking with Samburu warriors and camels, brilliant safari experts and ‘real’ local knowledge, masses of fun on the jeep in the Masai Mara, wonderful food, stunning scenery and wildlife, white sandy beaches and lovely warm seas..... You got it just right for us. You will have to go some to better this next time – that is your challenge!
Balmer Family – Kenya & Tanzania safari (Dec 2013)
January 10, 2014

Thank you so much for organising our amazing holiday and recommending South Luangwa in Zamibia. We have had a great time. Lodges, camps, hotels and all the transfers and pick ups were brilliant throughout Zambia, Victoria Falls and Cape Town. We loved every minute of the holiday, including the lions grumbling outside our tent at night in Kakuli Camp! I can thoroughly recommend Blackheath Lodge in Sea Point, Cape Town. The Jazz brunch at Winchester Mansions was very relaxed and fun.

A special thank you for organising both my visits this year to Namibia and introducing me to Conservancy Safaris.  They were such a privilege to travel with, especially this last trip where Garth personally guided me to the most remote areas I have ever been to.  This adventure with Conservancy Safaris was amongst my best […]

Thank you for all your help through the planning and booking over the last year or so for our honeymoon to Kenya & Mozambique. It was a truly magical experience and one we will never forget. Thanks for all your help in creating some fantastic memories for us! Lake Nakuru was stunning. After a boat trip on Lake Naivasha we had a lovely afternoon and evening at Loldia house - weird sitting reading whilst buffalo and hippo are so close! Karen Blixen Camp was a real safari experience. We loved it here the most and were well looked after. Governors hot air balloon ride over the Mara - AMAZING!!

May 31, 2013

Thank you so much for all your hard work ! Our entire honeymoon to Malawi and Zambia was flawlessly planned from start to finish. The advice we received prior to booking was knowledgeable and invaluable upon arrival. Julie was generous and patient with her time and answered all our questions and concerns, regularly in communication out of office hours. We literally had the trip of a lifetime with so many 'firsts' in terms of experiences. The safari in South Luangwa was amazing, the village experience at Ntchisi Forest Lodge was a bit of a culture shock, but glad we went and Kaya Mawa was truly out of this world, we were looked after incredibly by the management team, the food was superb and we had our own little pool!
Nicola & Robbie Nolan – Malawi & Zambia (April 2013)
May 20, 2013

Julie organised our holiday to Zambia which more than met our requirements - the accommodation was excellent (we stayed with Norman Carr Safaris in South Luangwa, Mayukuyuku in Kafue and Waterberry at Livingstone), our guides for safari and birdwatching were the best available and all travel arrangements went smoothly. Julie's attention to detail and knowledge of Zambia meant that our individual wishes were met throughout our holiday. Thank you very much!

Julie's knowledge of wildlife tourism to Africa is nothing short of excellent, she always comes up with some gems of ideas that you would never think of or find for yourself!

December 15, 2012

We are so grateful for all of Julie's advice having just come back from an absolutely fantastic holiday to Kenya. She went to huge lengths to provide us with different options that fitted our budget and wish list, and answered our endless questions with patience and enthusiasm. We have already recommended Julie to some of our friends and will carry on recommending her to lots more.
Anne & Paul – Kenya (September 2012)
October 13, 2012

We have just returned from a fantastic time in Malawi and Zambia – our first venture into Africa. Nothing was too much trouble and Julie always found the time to talk to us, answer our many questions and clarify every detail. We would not hesitate in recommending Travel with Jules to anyone who wanted first class, worry free, personal travel services.
Dianne & David Gazeley – Malawi & Victoria Falls (June 2012)
June 15, 2012

As a result of her extensive knowledge of Africa Julie fully understood my requirements and delivered a holiday which my son will never forget in Zambia. We could not fault the travel arrangements and were made to feel welcome where ever we went by all representatives and the staff of the camps we stayed at in South Luangwa and through their extensive knowledge of the local wildlife we truly experienced the magic of Africa.
Chris & Izaak – Zambia (June 2012)
June 11, 2012

Julie's knowledge and passion for Zambia was amazing, her knowledge meant that we were able to have "real" conversations about our trip and make the right decisions meaning that we had an unbelievable holiday. We can't wait to go back to Africa and when we do it will be through Travel With Jules.
Rob Shave – Zambia (Aug 2011)

One of the things I have come to love about you, Jules, is that you listen and take on board what makes me tick, and then tailor the holiday to fit me, not just try to convince me to fit a holiday in a brochure!
