Well, as you know, we are back from our first (?!) trip to Southern India, and enjoyed every minute. We did a considerable number of miles, in all forms of transport – car, tuktuk, bus, train, boat ! – had a wonderful driver for most of the trip and came home exhausted!! That’s age for you. Seriously, wonderful time.
Saw the temples in Tamil Nadu which I wanted to see and they did not disappoint. The colour and ornamentation is unbelievable. Went into the main one in Madurai with the guide and the fervent belief of the people in the gods is palpable.
Over the Western Ghats glorious scenery, lousy roads! Kerala is a lot more wealthy than Tamil Nadu due to tourism and spices and there are lots of very large houses but still a lot of poverty in spite of their Communist Government attempting to smooth it out. Two different laundries, or Dhobi Wallahs were fascinating but I couldn’t even lift the iron they were using. That was the electric one, the others were heated by coconut charcoal – thank Heaven we have moved on!
The Lotus Houseboat which we had to ourselves was beautiful! We hardly saw anyone else for the entire trip, being waited on as we floated around the Kerala backwaters.
The hotels were varied all with their unique features, finishing at the Taj Palace in Mumbai. Well, that lived up to reputation and we would happily stay there again!… All in all, thank you Jules & Nikhil for another glorious holiday.
James was a wonderful driver, guide and all round friend. Your local agents were very good. We had a couple of minor complaints but they were easily sorted. Sonny of W&O was great at checking up on us and ensuring we were happy and well. All in all wonderful!! On with the next!! Love India. Thank you to both of you.
