Throughout my career there have been iconic TV moments that have remained in my mind forever – watching David Attenborough getting up close to the mountain gorillas on Life on Earth is probably my most vivid memory from years back, making me yearn to travel to Africa and see them myself (which I have been lucky enough to do several times). 2013 gave us the impressive BBC David Attenborough series with awesome photography AFRICA. In Spring 2016 ‘The Durrells’ showcases the life of young Gerald Durrell as his family moved to Corfu and he developed his fascination for wildlife into a lifelong career in zoology and conservation. The latest exciting travelogue to hit our TV screens is the gorgeous Joanna Lumley’s Japan. We love Joanna and Japan in this office! Contact us and speak to Mags who has recently been to Japan (here she is drumming!), to arrange your own special holiday here.
The adventurous travels of Bruce Parry never fail to inspire me to explore the world’s remote cultures and adventure into new lands and meet new people. If you want to visit an Amazon tribe, travel across the Arctic and stay with Reindeer herders or meet the fascinating people of Ethiopia, we can sort that out for you! in 2016 on BBC TV Gordon Buchanan travelled to Brazil, Botswana and Papua New Guinea in ‘Tribes, Predators and Me’ to meet some of the most remote indigenous peoples of the planet and got up close to large predators such as Anacondas, Lions and Saltwater Crocodiles!
Earthflight was an incredible photography series on BBC showing amazing footage from a bird’s eye view around the world – if you want to see the wonders of the world such as Monument Valley, the Great Rift of Africa or the Andes and Amazon ask me how!
There have been in recent years some great Railway Journeys on TV – Michael Portillo has been tracing the old Bradshaw’s Guide around the European tracks and there have been re-runs of Great British Rail Journeys too. In 2015 – 2016 he also took some rail journeys in USA and in spring 2016 Billy Connolly is travelling on sleeper trains across America too.
Did you follow Simon Reeve round the Indian Ocean and visit the amazing islands and beaches of this stunning coastline? He also went to Cuba in December 2012. I love his down to earth presenting style and the fact that he brings up the ‘other side’ of tourism glossed over by some travel programmes. If you want to visit the man in the Seychelles on his private island of tortoises or see the ladies who make things from beach rubbish along the East Coast of Africa ask me where to go! Autumn 2014 saw Simon following the journeys of the world’s Sacred Rivers – get in touch if you would like your own adventure featuring rivers and lakes. In November 2014 Sue Perkins is travelling the length of the Mighty Mekong River.
If you followed Big Cat Diary you’ll love the BBC programme featuring life in the Masai Mara – I used to visit the Mara regularly in my days as a tour leader, so ask me to find the best holiday to get you there! If you fancy doing ‘India On Four Wheels’ (or by bike, on foot, by train or by elephant for that matter!) take a look at the India pages for ideas. Some of the Holiday Hijack programmes have had me cringing on the sofa and being embarrassed to be British, but it’s good that the other side of tourism has been highlighted. If you want to give something back when you go on holiday, why not spend some time staying with local families and learn about their culture or helping with volunteer projects? In 2014 featured on BBC was Hotel India – wow, what an amazing insight to the running of one of India’s most prestigious hotels in Mumbai! Lucky me – I have stayed there, along with other Taj Palaces in India, so do get in touch if you too would like to arrange a holiday to include a stay at the Taj Palace Hotel in Mumbai or any of the other Taj hotels. Or if you fancy your own version of Indian Summers in the hill stationsof the Himalayas or the ‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ we can book that too!
If you’ve always wanted to see the Manhattan skyline and visit the locations of your favourite TV shows and Films around New York and Boston, why not incorporate ‘On Location’ tours into a holiday to the United States? Food and Travel go hand in hand and there are endless TV programmes show casing delicious foods around the world. We really enjoyed Rick Stein’s India in search of the perfect curry! He cooked his way in 2015 from Venice to Istanbul. If you enjoyed the Hairy Bikers Bakation – ask us about a range of self drives, city breaks or foodie tours to suit you around Europe. One of the most enjoyable programmes I watched was Rick Stein’s Spain loving the fabulous food an people he met along the way, as he travelled around in a campervan. If you too want to sample the tapas bars of Seville, the grapes of Rioja wines and Catalan seafood, ask us to arrange a tailor made foodie holiday to Spain for you or if the spices and seafood of Asia are more your thing head to the floating markets and street cafes of Thailand!
