Follow Billy Connolly’s Tracks Across America!

Tailor made rail holidays across USA – Follow Billy Connolly’s Tracks Across America!

Below are examples of the three parts of the TV programme outlining the routes taken by Billy Connolly.  They can be booked (with flights included from the UK and fully bonded) as individual trips or as the complete circuit of all three rail journeys.  Any of the itineraries can be changed to suit your requirements so please contact us with your individual requirements and we will put a quote together for you. 01728 748209 or send an enquiry.

The recent range of television programmes that have seen celebrities travelling the world by train has certainly helped fuel people’s interest in rail holidays. Most recently we have been entertained by Billy Connolly’s observations about America’s backyard towns as he travels the four ‘corners’ of the USA by train. Billy Connolly’s Tracks Across America was a 3 part series that followed the Glaswegian-born comic as he took a ‘circular’ rail adventure around the United States on a 6,000-mile rail trip. Billy does what he does best, offer witty, insightful and wide-eyed reactions to the places and people he encounters on his journey. But the series also highlighted the many rail routes available to travellers who wish to experience their own slice of American life and culture.

Using a specialist AITO partner tour operator Travel With Jules can offer railway tourists the chance to follow in Billy’s tracks and create their own tailor made train journey through America.

The operator has designed three US rail tour options based on the three episodes in Billy’s series, which can be altered and adapted to suit your preferred route and stopovers. Take the train to enjoy the views from one major city to another or take advantage of the places en route and discover an America off the beaten tourist track. All include journeys on some of America’s iconic trains and railroads.  The plane/train option is a great way to see vast parts of America within the time frame of a holiday. Below are the summary itineraries for each section of the journey and prices include return flights from London.

Episode 1 – Chicago to Seattle

Begin your rail journey in Chicago and travel on the Empire Builder train to Seattle, visiting Montana’s answer to Glasgow (named after Billy Connolly’s own home city) en route and much more.

Episode 2 – Seattle to Dallas

Journeys on the jewel in the crown of America’s rail network and hurtle past jaw dropping vistas of land and sea along the West Coast and Pacific Ocean as you ride the Coast Starlight route from Seattle via San Francisco down to Los Angeles. Then travel by train to Dallas across ‘Big Country’ and under ‘Big Skies’.

We did it! Nearly 5 weeks, nearly 4000 miles, 23 beds ending at our regular holiday home resort near San Diego. Met some wonderful characters, seen a lot of sights and eaten in countless eateries, some really great and others perhaps not so. We actually met up with Jerry Mclanahan (author of EZ66) who duly signed our book and took photos, I was 66 that day, on Route 66 meeting the author! Some of the hotels were really wonderful. Loads of souvenirs, loads of photos to sort through and lots of memories and events to 'dine out on'. Thank you so much for your organisation, everything went well and worked seamlessly...

I’m currently in the process of visiting all the States of the USA and this trip was going to tick-off Alaska as number 45! All my other trips have been on a Harley or in a 4x4 (all recent years have been booked by Travel With Jules) so when a train trip around part of Alaska was suggested, this was going to be a new experience. I was a little apprehensive that each leg of my journey (5 in all, approx. 120 miles each) was going to take about 4 hours but the scenery in Alaska is spectacular and time flew by. Alaska is HUGE and so beautiful that I want to go back to see more of it. Probably my favourite State! … Thanks Jules and Mags for organising a most memorable trip.

We had a fantastic time on holiday in the States. As you know it was a surprise holiday for my girlfriend's 30th birthday, having it arranged by you meant that I didn't need to hide all the details or worry about all the booking details that needed to be done. I would definitely recommend this holiday to anyone wanting to do west coast USA. We really liked Monterey, it was peaceful and beautiful and we went Whale Watching. The drive to Las Vegas was a treat, the rolling hills and mountains across the desert were just beautiful.

So thanks, Jules and Magsie, for your thoughtful suggestions, for your hard work making all the bookings, for fixing our one problem while we slept, for finding us more time to do more, and for saving us money. It was truly a holiday of a lifetime.

America was terrific, excellent music and absolutely extraordinary history and intriguing places to stay, we enjoyed every stop but have become great fans of the B&B venues. I would recommend them all, so thanks for organising those, we'd have missed them if left to our own devices. Eye opening "Southern Hospitality"

We can’t thank Travel With Jules enough for all the work and effort they put in to organising our holiday of a life time! From the first email we sent to the day we came back, everything was trouble and stress free. Our only regret was we should have gone for 3 weeks instead of 2! Thank you Jules & Mags for making memories that will last a lifetime.

Our Route 66 trip was brilliant thank you. The driving was not as difficult as I expected - we bought the EZ66 guide in Joliet. Grand canyon was a great detour. I just enjoyed meeting the local people, they keep the route and history going, but not in a crazy way, just living on it.

If I could only put into words what Jules and Mags did for me, I've no doubt that many more would use this company. I can only express that hand on heart, you will not regret it. No travel company I have previously used compares and I look forward to booking my next adventure through 'Travel With Jules'.

Many of our travellers on Route 66 detour to the Grand Canyon – this ‘cowboy sleep out’ option is enjoyed from Grand Canyon Ranch at the west rim:  On the Cowboy Sleep Out, the best point is that this is run by a real cowboy.  Not the entertainer who tells stories over supper in the […]

Well the trip is over and I've done and I've done just over 3,600 road miles and seen the most fantastic scenery, drank all the local beers, eaten too much great food and had a brilliant time. Today is going to be a VERY long trip home but worth it. Thanks Julie for all your hard work in making it happen!

The Journey of a Lifetime on the Venice Simplon Orient Express! The whole holiday was a great success. Thank you very much for all your planning, booking and checking the finer details. We have many happy memories that will last for a long time! The Goring Hotel in London, the Pullman/Orient Express trains and Hotel Cipriani in Venice were all brilliant. Staff looked after us extremely well and were very patient.

One of the things I have come to love about you, Jules, is that you listen and take on board what makes me tick, and then tailor the holiday to fit me, not just try to convince me to fit a holiday in a brochure!
