Ethiopia is a stunning country full of history and culture. To the north of Addis Ababa are many historical towns, castles and churches. Experience the diverse history, culture and amazing landscapes of Ethiopia. See the beehive houses of the Dorze people and visit tribal villages and meet the people. Depending on the season, you either trek across the Simien mountains or visit the amazing Tigray region to the far north including Axum and Adigrat. This tour can also be done as just the north or just the south if you don't have a month to spare!
Starting in Addis, you head first to Kombolcha and Woldia on the Shoan Plateau and visit the Bati Market. On to Lalibela with it's wonderful rock-hewn churches. Then for trips in September to April you trek the Simien Mountains with their staggering scenery and huge troops of Gelada Baboons. The rest of the year you travel to the far north including Mekele, Adigrat and Axum, the Queen of Sheba's palace and bath and the monoliths of the region. All trips then continue back south with a boat trip on the Blue Nile and excursion to the falls and monastery visits on Lake Tana. Then through Bahir Dar and Debre Markos back through Addis via the Blue Nile gorge.
South of Addis you pass through Arba Minch and Dorze village, take a boat safari on Lake Chamo and overnight in a traditional lodge in Dorze with village culture and dancing. On to Konso and Jinka you visit more villages and a museum for different tribes people. The Hamer people's Saturday market is a sight to behold. Trip to Dimeka to meet the Dasanech tribe and to the Borena region for archaeological sites. On the way back to Addis, stop for some birdwatching at Lake Ziway.
This 26 day trip starts and ends in the capital Addis Ababa and includes a variety of simple hotels, lodges and for the September - April departures, 7 nights camping. Transport used includes 4x4 jeeps, minibuses and boats. Maximum group size 15, average 10.
