Egypt

Egypt is packed with fascinating treasures and ancient history and is one of the top choices for cultural holidays – did you know that it is in fact the oldest tourist destination on earth? The Pyramids and the Colossi of Thebes were marvelled at by the ancient Greeks and Romans!

There is much to choose from here with the two main areas being the River Nile and the ancient sites and the Red Sea Riviera with it’s world class dive sites and golf courses. The attractions of Egypt also include the souks and mosques around the towns and the Sinai and East and West deserts.

Cairo is a chaotic capital city, sometimes known as the ‘city of minarets’ and is surrounded by the desert where you will find the Pyramids at Giza, the Sphinx and masses of treasures at the Eygptian Museum. Luxor is home to some of the oldest ancient sites in the world and was built on the site of Thebes over 4000 years ago. The burial place of the Pharaohs can be visited at the Valley of the Kings including the famous burial site of Tutankhamun and Nefertari’s decorated final resting place at the Valley of the Queens. If you enjoy quieter locations for your sight seeing, try Aswan to the south where beautiful river islands can be reached under the billowing sails of the feluccas and you can visit Abu Simbel and enjoy Aswan’s busy markets and amazing views.

Nile Cruises come in all shapes and sizes  – large cruise ships or smaller, luxury boutique style ones! Each day you will have a different view and enjoy lots of stops for sightseeing along the way. Most cruises are four or seven nights long. Combine a Nile cruise with a stay in Luxor, Cairo or the Red Sea with it’s white sandy beaches, clear seas and colourful coral reefs and excellent diving and snorkelling.

Red Sea Riviera holidays offer sun and beach 365 days of the year and there are a number of resorts to choose from, so this is a great place for winter sun. Sharm El Sheikeh is located on the tip of the Sinai peninsular on the other side of the water to Hurghada and tends to be the busiest place with plenty of huge resorts and hotels, many restaurants and shops and a wide range of activities including trips to Mount Sinai and St Catherine’s Monastery. Not far from Sharm is the quieter resort of Dahab which is a water sports centre including fantastic windsurfing and many fabulous reefs making diving popular here. The area is in two part, with the former Bedouin village of Assalah to the north and El Qura Bay to the south where the international hotels are. There are streets of colour and character between the two where you can spend days bartering for bargains! The sea front has a range of bars, restaurants and shisha cafes. The other place to check out on the Sinai Peninsula is the fairly new resort of Taba. Surrounded by stunning mountain backdrops and having stretches of golden sand and scenic bays, Taba sits between Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.  It is a peaceful and relaxing Red Sea destination great for families or couples.

Over on the western side of the Red Sea, you could holiday at El Gouna, between the mountains and shores of the Red Sea, this is an island surrounded by lagoons.  There are great shops and spas and a good selection of bars and restaurants.  Great beaches offer water sports and snorkelling and you can take day trips inland for desert safaris.  The other option here is Hurghada, easily reached from Luxor and an area of natural beauty with sandy beaches and clear waters with amazing sunsets. There are again great shops and restaurants with diving, wind surfing and other activities. South of here and you will find yourself away from crowds and enjoying miles and miles of wild sandy beaches with beautiful seas at El Quseir.

There are often great twin centre holidays on offer in Egypt, ask me about combining a Nile Cruise with Luxor or the Red Sea, or join one of the many group adventure holidays to this exciting historical country!

Our holiday to Egypt was great! The Stella di Mare Beach Hotel was lovely and we had an fabulous time. I got my Open Water and the children their Advanced Open Water ..... the instructors at Desert Rose were brilliant .... We even went for a Night Dive which was amazing. We ate most nights at the Asian restaurant which was perfect for us. We would definitely return to Sharm, thank you for organising it.

One of the things I have come to love about you, Jules, is that you listen and take on board what makes me tick, and then tailor the holiday to fit me, not just try to convince me to fit a holiday in a brochure!
