Tipped as one of the up and coming holiday destinations in the coming year, Colombia is featured by many tour operators who know their way round the coffee clad mountains and vibrant cities. I can find you fabulous group adventure holidays or tailor make a private journey around this fascinating Latin American country.
Probably most famous for cocaine and crime in the past, Colombia offers visitors a warm welcome and has invested massively in security, infrastructure and tourism. The land spans the Andes mountains and has coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. This is a fabulous wildlife holiday destination with one of the largest bird counts in the world.
The capital city of Bogota is a bustling centre with skyscrapers, international hotels and lots of parks. But the best place to visit is the historic heart of La Candelaria where you will find museums and galleries. The best known place in the country is Cartagena, a beautiful town on the Caribbean coast. Founded in 1533 the city’s old quarter is now a World Heritage Site and houses lots of fortifications and streets of pretty colonial buildings.
Heading northeast you find Baranquilla (the birthplace of Shakira!) and where there is a carnival every February. From Santa Marta you depart for tours into the stunning Tayrona National Park, which spans a 50 mile stretch of the Caribbean with pristine beaches, coral reefs and rainforest. If you want a more commercial beach experience, head to the islands of San Andres and Providencia – actually off the coast of Nicaragua
On the lush western slops of the Andes you will find the ‘Coffee Triangle‘ a rapidly growing tourist destination. In the heard of this rural area you find the cities of Armenia, Manizales and Pereira. There are lots of accommodation options here including farm stays on coffee plantations.
A suggested itinerary for a tailor made holiday could include travelling from Bogota to Villa de Leyva, Cartagena then the Rosario Islands and Pereira in the Coffee Triangle, returning to Bogota, this can comfortably be done in around 12 days.
