At any time of the year Portugal offers a fabulous relaxing and cultural destination. In the winter months head to the cities and the southern sunny regions of Algarve and Alentejo whilst Madiera enjoys mild winters of around 16-20C. We love to promote the more historic & character hotels, small guesthouses and off the beaten track ‘hidden gems’.
The capital, Lisbon, has hidden churches and peaceful taverns with a maze of alleyways and stairs to wander around for days! The national park of Peneda-Geres has old stone villages and 170,000 acres of dramatic mountain scenery for the outdoor enthusiast. Along the southern coastline, there are windswept cliffs and dune covered beaches plus of course plenty of golf courses in The Algarve. Natural history sounds you in Portugal from the undeveloped Atlantic coastline to relaxed countryside views filled with spring flowers and the mountains of the border region. Walking, mountain biking and kayaking are available across the mainland.
Enjoy the culture of Portugal – traditional festivals take place all over Portugal with dancing, drinking and feasting – in June there is the Festival of St Antony in Lisbon and the traditional Fado music can be heard in bars and clubs across the cities. Try staying in the characterful Pousadas, converted farmhouses, castles and monasteries in beautiful parts of Portugal.
City breaks are popular to Portugal with Lisbon and Porto being within 2.5 hrs flying time from the UK. Food and drink holidays abound here! The coastline, countryside and mountains of Portugal have regional influences on the cuisine of Portugal and we can craft your own gastronomic break to suit your requirements. Wine (and of course port!), sherry, black pork, local cheeses and plenty of seafood await your tastebuds in Portugal!
Madeira, sometimes known as the ‘Garden Island’ sits off shore in the Atlantic, but is part of Portugal. It is a perfect all year round holiday destination with mild winters and plenty of sunshine. Thick forests, waterfalls, horse riding, walking and natural history tours are popular here. For botanists, Madeira is a paradise islands with flowers and trees flourishing everywhere. The capital, Funchal, has colourful daily fruit and fish markets and attractive architecture surrounds the narrow, cobbled old town. Taste Madeira wine and explore the many craft centres, making traditional goods such as jewellery, leather and linen. Madeira has become something of a sporting centre offering canyoning, surfing, hiking and whale and dolphin watching.
The Azores is another Portuguese collection of islands, further out into the Atlantic and a fabulous destination for whale watching and diving. There are nine major and eight smaller islands, lying 1500km from Lisbon. The islands of volcanic origin are actually the tips of some of the highest mountains on the planet, were they to be measured from their base at the foot of the deep ocean!!
