In the far north of Finland & Sweden, deep inside the Arctic Circle is Lapland, Europe’s last great unspoiled wilderness area. Breathe in the cleanest air in the world and enjoy a range of winter activities much more than those offered by expensive ski resorts. There are a range of activities from short weekend breaks to weeks with a variety of accommodation in log cabins, wigwam style tents or igloos. Want to take the children (or big children!) to find Santa in the forest, ride on a sleigh or take a husky ride? Then get in touch for a tailor made non commercial Lapland experience.
By day you can experience reindeer, snowmobile and husky dog safaris with the spectacular backdrop of frozen lakes and hills. After dark, in the silence of the Arctic night, you could witness the Northern Lights, one of the most awesome experiences on the planet.
Adventurous travellers can try cross-country skiing along miles of ski trails, well lit and maintained. Or have a go at herding reindeer? Learn to steer snowmobiles and ‘mush’ a team of huskies and if you want a real epic adventure travel into the wilderness for several days with the husky team and learn snow shoeing or ice fishing. For families at Christmas time, there is the chance to meet Santa in the forest, take reindeer sleigh rides, enjoy kick sledging, tobogganing and snowball fights!
If you are looking for a private, luxury Lapland experience please do get in touch. There are some stunning log cabins, chic apartments or igloo rooms we can book for you, there are even private jets we can charter to Lapland if you want a truly bespoke experience. Some of the Santa holidays are very commercial, so please ask us about some out of the way remote places where you can find Father Christmas! Unusual places to stay include ice and igloo hotels, the Tree Hotel or camping in a Sami Lavu!
True Lapland is the home of the nomadic Sami people – a land of magic and legends in the far North-west of Finland. It is about 1000km north of Helsinki and 300km north of Rovaniemi, the commercial Arctic Circle centre. From Enontekio you can explore the immense wilderness and travel the ‘Northern Lights Route’ to Tromso. There are crystal clear lakes and rivers and vast forests. Enontekio is part of the Sami Homeland where this community of around 2,000 people and 20,000 reindeer, carry out a way of life evolved over centuries. The Sami are indigenous people of Europe and the only ethnic group on our continent to be recognised as aboriginal. There are several dialects of their language and they cover a huge area called Sapmi stretching from central Norway and Sweden across Finland into Russia. Reindeer are their source of food, with tendons and sinews used for sewing and leather for clothing.
The Arctic Winter
November is the start of the Arctic winter with the first falls of snow and polar nights starting and the beginning of the period when the Northern Lights appear.
December has increased flights to visit Santa and there are 22 hours of darkness with the sun never really reaching over the horizon.
January days become a little longer and snow is deep underfoot, a fabulous time to enjoy polar blue skies and Northern Lights.
February is a great half term break for families and the first glimpses of Spring arrive.
March has the deepest snow of the winter, longer daylight hours and great for cross country skiing and overnight Arctic adventures.
