Greece is one of our favourite places in the Mediterranean! The people are lovely, the sea clear and blue, the food simple, tasty and plentiful and it’s always warm! Athens of course has the bustle of a modern city, wonderful tavernas and bars, historic sites and theatre, but not far away on the mainland, why not explore the Peloponnese with it’s sleepy fishing villages and empty beaches or travel up the Aegean coast to Parga and other small towns set into the back drop of verdant hills? All around the Peloponnese there are spectacular mythical and historic sites left by the great ancient Greek civilisation. Dramas played out here involved theatre, death, sport and religion and created the cornerstone of this huge empire. The island of Evia which is almost attached to the mainland offers great opportunity to explore fishing villages and coves and plenty of mountainous walks.
Greece has a great climate all year with some islands being warmer and more sheltered than others. It borders Albania and Republic of Macedonia with Bulgaria to the north and Turkey very close to the most easterly Greek islands to the east. To the east of mainland Greece is the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea to the west. South is the Mediterranean Sea. Greece, with all its islands has the 12th longest coastline in the world at nearly 8500 miles in length! There are around a staggering 1400 islands and only 227 are inhabited, so there really is a never ending list of places to explore here! Greece is also surprisingly mountainous with Mount Olympus being the highest peak at 9,570ft.
Greece is steeped in history and wherever you go there are ruins and monuments to be explored and enjoyed, the best known including the Acropolis, Mount Olympia, Gates of Hades and one of Greece’s most sacred places Delphi. Join an escorted tour or a Greek Cruise with a specialist historian to guide you round the country. The Parthenon in Athens is the city’s main landmark, created by the ancient Greeks two and a half thousand years back …. this saw the birth of language, science, democracy and medicine into western civilisation. One of the most impressive still intact amphitheatres can be found at Epidaurus. If you are particularly interested in the history and culture of Greece, there are plenty of escorted tours or tailor made options we can put together for you.
A popular place for movie sets, you might want visit the places where these famous films were shot! Mamma Mia is the most successful movie show casing Greece in recent years and was set against the backdrop of Skopelos, Skiathos and the Pelion Coast. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was set in World War Two on the island of Kefalonia. The Big Blue (fiction story of a deep water diver) was partly shot around Alonissos. Shirley Valentine, the hilarious film of a bored housewife trying to find herself was set on the island of Mykonos and Bourne Identity was partly filmed here too. For Your Eyes Only with the famous shots of hand gliding at the hanging monasteries took James Bond to Meteora.
Traditional summer holidays to Greece usually focus on the beaches and with a total of 379 blue flag beaches here you will find some of the cleanest waters in the Mediterranean. This is a great place also to head inland for walking and sightseeing. Ask me about group walking and leisurely adventure tours to Greece and the islands. Take time on your travels to meet local people and learn about their traditional culture and wander or cycle through the hill villages and off the beaten track, where it can feel like time has stood still for many centuries and shepherds still tend their flocks and live in hillside huts. Food and drink here has many family recipes passed through generations and gatherings of large families and friends including traditional Greek Weddings, are a sight to behold – make friends with the locals and get an invite!
The Ionian islands include the well known destinations of Corfu and Meganissi or head to Kefalonia or Lefkas for a low key authentic Greek experience. Corfu has miles of walking trails and if you head by ferry to Paxos you can also enjoy plenty of walks and near empty beaches and coves. The Aegean Islands of Samos, Patmos, Ikaria and Lemnos are simply stunning – plenty of history and culture and peace and quiet. You can island hop by ferry here too. Another good option for combining islands is in the Sporades. Fly to Skiathos and then boat to quieter Skopelos (of Mama Mia fame!) or little Alonissos where you can book a self catering cottage or town house and unwind watching the world go by or walking the narrow goat tracks across the islands.
Crete is one of the biggest and hottest islands (and the resorts stay open here late into the season) and has nightlife, mountains, beaches and wildlife, hire a car here to get the most out of a visit. There are some fabulous five star luxury spa hotels around Elounda Bay on Crete. Rhodes is another large island with fascinating history, watch the sunset from old Rhodes town.
The Cyclades, in the central Aegean Sea, are iconic ‘Greece’ with white washed hillside villages, clear blue water and traditional customs still evident, your idyllic Greek island postcard! Paros and Naxos have great beaches and beautiful scenery with bright fishing boats, donkeys wandering the streets and windmills in the background. Head for Santorini for luxury hotels and spas, unique blue domed buildings, dramatic cliffs and bucket list sunsets!
Sailing is a great holiday option anywhere around the Greek islands. Hire a traditional fishing style boat with cabins and a crew or take a luxury yacht or larger cruise ship. Hop around the islands, swimming and snorkelling on the way, stopping at harbour side tavernas to sample local food – what better way to enjoy the real Greece!
Greece is known for its wonderful conditions for artists, from the quality of its light to the wide variety of subject matter, and such vibrant colours! Painting Holidays are available either as a few sessions or an organised painting week, in several contrasting but equally beautiful areas. The holidays are suitable for painters of all abilities, especially novices who will receive excellent one-on-one guidance and tuition. All the artist leaders know their areas well and will show you the best painting spots. Materials are not included except in Crete and Chrani. These are not necessarily group holidays – no minimum numbers are required, so I can include some painting in a tailor made holiday.
Wherever in Greece you want to go and however you want to do it, let us know your requirements and we will create the perfect tailor made Greek holiday for you!
