Take a holiday to Denmark for Nordic culture and cuisine, plenty of great restaurants and beaches and great city breaksSelf drive or escorted tours, perfect for cycling holidays or family beach houses.

Denmark is the most southern of the Nordic countries, southwest from Sweden and south of Norway and is bordered by Germany to the south.  The Kingdom of Denmark has two autonomous countries the Faroe Islands in North Atlantic and Greenland near to North America. Denmark is made of a large peninsula of Europe in the North Sea called Jutland and many islands, the most well known Zealand, Funen, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm, plus many smaller islands known as the Danish Archipelago.

Copenhagen, the capital is a vibrant city with plenty of culture and charm and easy to explore on foot. You can take a free city bike and enjoy pedalling around. Enjoy the many waterfront cafes and watch the world go by!  Delicious food can be enjoyed here – try the Nordic kitchen and of course Danish Pastries! Having more than 10 Michelin stars, Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s number one gourmet city. The most popular tourist attraction in Denmark is the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. Here is the statue of the Little Mermaid in the harbour, the Tycho Brahe Planetarium, Christiansborg and the Nyhavn quaysides. This is a great day out for the family as there are traditional fairground amusements and in the winter there are skaters on the frozen lake.  In summer there are firework displays every weekend. The gardens are open until midnight all week and 1am at weekends. There are thousands of floral displays and many cafes and restaurants. There is an open air stage with daily performances and the gardens are cleverly lit up at night.

About half an hour’s drive north of Copenhagen is the Karen Blixen Museum.  This is the former home of Denmark’s first lady of literature, she wrote as Isak Dinesen and her most famous novel Out of Africa became a world famous film (and my own favourite film ever!!). Her family home is a museum and some of the furniture has been returned here from her home in Kenya.

Denmark’s second biggest city is Aarhus is a great place to spend a few days with old world charm and a buzzy social scene, plus gorgeous forests and beaches nearby. There is a lively music scene here and great shopping, both in modern stores and the arty, boutique shops of the cobbled streets. The Frederiksberg Quarter is home to some great restaurants with a Nordic cuisine.

On the island of Funen, you can visit the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, probably the most famous ever fairytale writer.  There are exhibitions of his life and worked and children are invited to the cultural centre Fyrtojet (the Tinder Box) to hear the stories told.

To the far north of Denmark is Aalborg, which has great shops, cafe scene and clubs, plus a gateway to the nature of the north nearby.  Most famous here is the Aalborg Akvavit a clear high spirited liquor that many Danes enjoy with herrings or other local delicacies. The town is pretty and has many shops, restaurants and bars within easy walking distance of each other.  Visit the nearby Lindholm Hoje which is a Viking Settlement and home to one of the most important places in Danish history.  It was excavated in 1952 with 700 graves and houses a Viking Museum. There are other Viking sites in northern Jutland.

About an hour’s drive from Aalborg is Skagen with wild landscapes, fantastic beaches and famous for it’s artists colonies. Here, two seas meet at the northern point of continental Europe. North Jutland has some of Denmark’s most popular coastal resorts including Blokhus and Lokken which are great for family holidays, watersports and outdoor activities.

You found fabulous hotels that met my specification in fabulous locations, booked them and arranged train tickets and flight tickets then sent these to my elderly mum so she was confident of our itinerary and travel arrangements.

One of the things I have come to love about you, Jules, is that you listen and take on board what makes me tick, and then tailor the holiday to fit me, not just try to convince me to fit a holiday in a brochure!
