After over 50 years of communist rule, Cuba is now firmly back on the tourist map and one of the most welcoming and friendly places for travellers wanting something different from their Caribbean holiday. The culture of Cuba is unlike any other with some wonderful contrasts. It has the laid back atmosphere and gorgeous beaches found all around the Caribbean but has the rhythm and warmth of Latin America. The capital of Havana has a ‘faded colonial’ feel to it with vibrant markets and cobbled streets – music sounding round every corner!
Cuba has a bit of everything including over 300 naturally sandy beaches and a year round enjoyable climate (although it can be very wet at certain times, it is warm rain!). There are mountains and underwater coral reefs, world heritage sites and history. The cities with their colonial buildings, parks and Cuban rhythms are well worth exploring.
If you want a natural history holiday, this is a great birding destination with 160 species, 28 being endemic to Cuba. Try and find the tiniest bird in the world, the Bee Hummingbird. San Felipe Keys reserve in the west of Cuba has 9km of virgin beaches, home to nesting turtles and other endemic species. There are several UNESCO biosphere reserves and parks with great conservation projects.
Cuba is of course a great wedding and honeymoon destination too, with more culture and history than some of the other more traditionally ‘sand and palm trees’ type islands!
Suggested experiences in Cuba include:
Seafood of course features highly in the cuisine of Cuba and it’s rum is famous around the world. Try a Mojito – a wonderful combination of rum, mint, sugar and soda. In Old Havana try a meal in Floridita and visit one of Hemingway’s favourite bars La Bodeguita del Medio.
