Although suffering in recent years from political and financial challenges, Zimbabwe retains its dramatic landscapes with a near perfect climate with friendly and welcoming people, a wide range of historical and cultural attractions and of course Victoria Falls, the adventure capital of Southern Africa – White water rafting, bungee jumping, flights over the falls … the list goes on!

Zimbabwe also offers amazing wildlife experiences in some gorgeous safari camps. Many of the camps we use are run by African Bush Camps, here are just some suggestions for where to stay and what to do on your tailor made African safari to Zimbabwe.

Somalisa Tented Camp is set in the heart of Hwange National Park and is famous for it’s large numbers of elephant herds. Set in a stunning location tucked away on an acacia island along the edge of an ancient seasonal flood plain, Somalisa provides guests with breathtaking views of the savannah plains across the famous Kennedy Vlei line. Consisting of seven elegantly furnished Sail Tents with gauze sliding doors, a glass wood-burner fireplace for the cold winter nights, and an overhead fan for the hot summer days, each tent has en suite bathroom facilities including flush toilets, an indoor and outdoor shower, as well as a copper bathtub. The main decking area includes split level decking with a separate lounge and dining area, as well as a small splash pool for guests overlooking the “Elephant Pool” and a natural waterhole where herds of game congregate to drink and where guests can relax whilst soaking in the African bush. Activities include guided walks lead by qualified and passionate guides who will share their knowledge and love of the bush with you, game drives and night drives. Wildlife sightings include elephant, kudu, sable antelope, zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok, the rare and endangered roan antelope, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, hyena, and many other wildlife species.

Somalisa Expeditions is a smaller more rustic camp in the heart of the park and combines well with the main camp for a varied safari experience. For family safaris, we recommend Somalisa Acacia Camp – this is a premium, homely Family Safari Camp in Hwange National Park.  Somalisa Acacia has recently under gone a complete rebuild and now comprises of 2 Family Units with inter-leading walkways between the parents and children’s rooms which are both en-suite, as well as 2 standard Sail Tents. All the simple but luxurious tents are on slightly raised decks, under the dappled canopy of a grove of Acacias on the western side of Somalisa. The ultimate Zimbabwe Safari experience!

Kanga Camp sits inland in Mana Pools National Park and home to the famous ‘Armchair Safari’! Set in the most remote part of the World Heritage Site in Mana Pools is the Kanga Pan. The 12-bedded tented camp has en-suite bathroom facilities with outdoor showers and basins overlooking the water hole. The main area has a comfortable lounge and dining area offering you uninterrupted views of a very active water hole. Relax in the upper deck lounge under the shade of a mahogany or sit on the deck below near the splash pool and enjoy Kanga − the old Africa in a new era. Kanga Pan itself is the only known water source in the area available throughout the year, making it a hub for wildlife and a delight to explore on foot. Pristine and undeveloped, this area gives you a pure, unspoilt, private African safari experience. Besides game drives, bird watching and walking excursions, an hour’s drive brings you to the Zambezi flood plains in Mana Pools for canoeing and fishing excursions. Kanga works well in collaboration with Zambezi Expeditions (an exclusive riverside tented camp) to provide guests with an overall view of the inland and riverside experiences available in Mana Pools, one of the last remaining “untouched” wilderness paradises.

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge and Spa offers a luxury Lake Kariba experience. Set in one of Africa’s finest wilderness locations with an elevated position on a range of remote hills overlooking the vastness of Lake Kariba. Bumi is situated near the North Eastern border of the Matusdona National Park and is easily accessible by light aircraft and boat, allowing you to be swiftly transported into paradise without the stress of a long journey. The safari lodge has a total of 10 rooms, all with views over Lake Kariba. All rooms are premium rooms with balconies and uninhibited views over Lake Kariba. Taking centre stage is the beautiful infinity pool that seems to blend endlessly into the lake horizon. Bumi Hills is home to lion, leopard, big herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as a multitude of different plains game. Guests can indulge in superb fishing in the lake waters surrounding the safari lodge with bream and the fighting tiger fish in abundance. Birding and cultural experiences (with the rich local Tonga culture) also abound. Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is a dream wedding destination – an incredible setting for a small, intimate event (maximum of 46 people) whilst enjoying special time with family and friends surrounded by Lake Kariba and a myriad of wildlife!

Elsewhere in Zimbabwe are iconic sites such as The Great Zimbabwe Ruins to the south, The Eastern Highlands with walking and birdwatching, amazing rock formations in Matopos National Park (home of Cecil Rhodes grave) where you can also see Black Rhino.

I felt like the King of Scotland again! Another amazing holiday to Africa .. thoroughly enjoyed everything in Zimbabwe and already want to go back again! In Mana Pools I got up very close on walking safaris to a pack of wild dogs and saw "Boswell" the 50 year old elephant who stands on his back legs to feed!

Jean and I are fairly familiar with safari travel and Zambia would be the first place that I would recommend to any newcomers. The help of the Africa Tours reception on arrival in Lusaka which you arranged for us is a bonus. One of the wildlife highlights was seeing a pack of wild dogs on their kill.

I think we must have got caught in a time warp as the time seemed to stretch away into the distance. Thank you so much for suggesting Zambia and Malawi to us in the first place and organising everything, including the unique wedding ceremony in South Luangwa!

Julie's knowledge of wildlife tourism to Africa is nothing short of excellent, she always comes up with some gems of ideas that you would never think of or find for yourself!

To lift a business contact and develop the relationship into friendship takes a special talent and creates an important bond with the customer. It has been a pleasure for me to deal with someone so proficient in her expertise as Julie.

One of the things I have come to love about you, Jules, is that you listen and take on board what makes me tick, and then tailor the holiday to fit me, not just try to convince me to fit a holiday in a brochure!
