Until recent years, getting to the world’s frozen continent was left to those great explorers and adventurers who had time to devote to pioneering expeditions that sometimes were gone for years at a time. Now, with a range of ships able to access Antarctica through the southern summer months and even some flights available for ‘fly and cruise’ (if you really cannot stomach the sea crossings!), this magical land of beauty and extremes is open to anyone willing to venture to the ‘end of the earth’!
I would recommend travelling on a conservation conscious small vessel which gives you the opportunity to benefit from experienced expedition leaders and guides and follow the footsteps of those great explorers. Journey into a stunning scenery of crumbling glaciers and groaning icebergs which are opened up to ship access in the short summer months. As the ice pack melts and channels deepen, you are witness to one of the most incredible wildlife spectacles on earth – millions of penguins and sea birds breed here and with seals and whales also frequenting the waters, you won’t know where to look first! Travel by zodiac to watch these magnificent creatures, sometimes in 24 hour daylight. Combine Antarctica with travels in South America or an extended trip including The Falklands and South Georgia for even more of an extreme wildlife fix!
There are also departures available from New Zealand combining this incredible country of lakes, glaciers and wildlife with the sub-Antarctic islands.
Optional adventure activities around Antarctica such as sea kayaking, camping on ice, cross country skiing or mountaineering can be added, ask for details.
