If sharing breakfast with a Giraffe is your thing ..

If you would like to experience feeding giraffes and share your breakfast with them, then I strongly suggest you take a trip to Giraffe Manor in Kenya!  During the late 90s, I was lucky enough to find myself working round the corner from the Nairobi National Park and the suburb of Karen (named after Karen Blixen of Out of Africa fame!).  A small area of bushland here was set aside to protect the wildlife and nature of the area and ensure a sanctuary for the rare Rothschild's Giraffe.  I first visited these wonderful animals whilst on a shopping trip to the 'Karen Stores' (which still today feels like the dusty trading post shop it started out as 100 years ago!).

Parking at the entry gate to the Giraffe Centre I was struck by the friendly welcome of the guides and the very comprehensive education centre they have set up - this enables local school children to learn about their native wildlife as well as get the chance to feed and cuddle the giraffes!  Of course, there are more big kids (myself included!) than little ones who want to get up close and personal with a Giraffe .....

The education centre sits alongside Giraffe Manor, a beautifully restored old colonial manor house which has hotel rooms for rent.  But this is no ordinary hotel .....

Don't just take my word for it!  Here is what Colin and Mel thought when they ended their East Africa safari and beach holiday here in August 2014 ....

"The final part of our adventure took us back to Nairobi, where we stayed in what has to be the best hotel in the world…well, certainly if you’re a giraffe lover…Giraffe Manor! We arrive late in the evening and were delighted by a private candlelit dinner in the  wood panelled dining room. We were then showed to our beautiful room on the first floor. I was surprised to see a bowl of giraffe food on the shelf next to the set of drawers, until the manager told us that there was a possibility that the giraffes may come early in the morning to the bedroom window…well, they did! Feeding a giraffe at 6am was beyond all of our dreams and expectations. We then went into the courtyard to feed them and finally we also fed them as they popped their heads through the breakfast room window! The perfect end to the perfect holiday!"
